Sorry to hear that Mike, it's amazing how much pain is involved in seemingly minor road rash before everything finishes healing... Glad there was nothing more serious.

Spike, sorry to hear about your get-off, glad you're not seriously bunged up!

Just out of curiosity, how many knuckles do you have on your left hand?

Lost my XB12S this week. A guy in an F-150 lost control and crossed my lane directly in front of me, hitting the median barrier just about head-on. I had less than 10 feet to get on the brakes and went down when the front tire hit the side of his truck...as he careened back out into traffic.

Lessons learned:

1. Gear up! My helmet was destroyed and my leathers took a beating, but I walked away unharmed except for the inevitable sore muscles the next day. I don't always wear full gear...will now!

2. Space, space, space. In traffic you can't always create a good space barrier around you. In this case I could have, as traffic was light, but I wasn't paying attention to this guy. I should have either passed him quickly or backed off, as our speeds were too similar for our proximity.

3. Dirt experience pays off on the street. I'm glad I knew how to ride and get off a falling/sliding bike because my left footpeg and shifter were torn off...could have been my foot.

4. Wear your seatbelt. The pickup driver wasn't, and broke an ankle and at least his nose according to the EMTs.

Now it's just a matter of settling the insurance and saving pennies for my next Buell!

Ethan:

That's about the best "lessons learned" post whackosmacko summary I have seen in a while.

Most folks, when you mention "gear" think helmet. Frankly, I rank GOOD gloves right up there with it. Anyone who has ever stumbled and fell will be familiar with the first instinctive reactio when falling.

Explore space - there is nothing like it. If you don't have it...make it....by moving. If you can't "make it", then "fake it"...by adjusting other variables like speed and where you are focusing your attention. Most likely road in the USA to have this lesson taught you you, impromptu, on...The Beltway around Washington, DC. A town filled with folks from smallvilles from Idaho to Arkansas, new to the city and traffic. I got both my lessons there within 20 minutes of each other. Don't miss my lesson about how to handle kids in the back of a minivan when pops is talking to mom while entering your "space". Remind me to ....

Dirt - Nothing like it. The chance to get off with relatively reduced consequences. Most the time there is little you can actually "do" as you and your motorcycle are taking diverging paths. It's good to know the few things you can.

Seat belts - I had the pleasure to spend a week with Dr. Ken Cooper (who many recall for the famous term he coined "aerobics". He summed it up...."everybody is leaving this world. There are two things you can do to significantly accelerate the process, not wearing a seat belt and smoking cigarettes.

I am glad you came through this so well. By the way, today would be a great day to be thankful for that and I am pleased to be the first to tell you...."You are gonna LOVE your next Buell"

Ride safe, eat much, sleep well,

One of my coworkers went down last week on his Honda Hawk 650. He was in heavy traffic looking right for a space to squeeze into when traffic in front of him slowed. He looked ahead too late and ran into the back of a truck. The closing rate wasn't very fast, but enough to knock him down. He went down doing about 55mph and amazingly was ok.

The damage to the bike was substancial and estimated at $2000 dollars. The bike's worth was determined to be $900 by his insurance. He's opted to repair it himself and not file a claim.

To make things worse his dad was about to pass on his Ducati M900 (he now rides an S4R) and it looks like that may never happen.

Be careful out there!

My younger brother had a big accident. He lost it on a corner doing well over 100mph. To make things worse there were signs and 4x4 posts going around this corner. He went in a little too hot (probably way too hot), tried to make it, then hit a patch of gravel and lowsided. He told me he hung onto the bike until he could make it in between a sign and a post.

The bike is totalled, of course. It slid then started barrel rolling...coming to rest 60 yards from where he started sliding. My brother was much luckier. He hurt only his pinkie. He was wearing proper attire.

BE CAREFUL OUT THERE!

I had an F-up coming to work this morning. I knocked out two firsts...it's the first crash in the rain and first highside. Whew...good to get those out of the way at last .

I've got these new Pirelli Skorpion Syncs, see, and I've had a hard time breakin' 'em loose at all. So I give 'er a handful of throttle comin' through a 90 degree corner to get a nice slide and wiggle out of 'er and she totally and violently flipped me off. The rear end was carrying so much momentum that the she kept coming around despite my best efforts.

My LSL frame sliders were put to good use. My shift peg and handlebar got bent. Everything else is miraculously unscathed. I was trying to hold on so tight that I ripped a bar end slider off the throttle side...bolt and all.

I've got a little scratch and a hurtin' groin muscle but ah well...that's the price of admission for this kind of ride.

Lesson learned:
At least knock the hairs off a new tire before you start screwing around!

If you love your motorcycle, set it free.
If it comes back, it is yours.
If it fails to return,
You probably high-sided.

Thanks fellas. I haven't had a chance to look over the bike much...just noticed that I bent the right handlebar forward. No wonder the brake lever comes to the bar now! Amazing what your body can take.

8/26/04 - I was riding through my usual route home...following two cars, the second one was tailgating the first. Something caught my attention to the right so I checked it out. Numerous times I see kids playing ball, etc, and I wanted to make sure some kid wasn't running out in my path. Nope, just a dog on a leash. I looked forward and DAMMIT. The first car hadn't signaled and the second had slammed on her brakes...so now there are TWO cars stopped in front of me. I jam the brakes so fast the rear comes up. I start to steer off to the right on one wheel...the rear comes down too far off to the right and with a locked tire (my foot did NOT want to stop braking). When it did it caused the bike to suddenly flop on its right side. I probably slid a whopping 5 feet. Bent the handlebar, ripped off the mirror and turn signal, and a light scuff. The guy behind me happened to be on a bike and pulled over. At this point I was still sitting on the bike - and having problems getting off of it. As he helped lift it and I got off of it, I realized my right foot had gotten stuffed under the rear header. Then I realized - THAT's why my foot was burning! The car in front of me had pulled onto the side and came up to see if everything was okay. I guess I had scuffed her bumper? That's when I noticed the left mirror was wobbly - the frame support for it had snapped. From what I pieced together I must have slid the front end of the bike under (and then out of) the corner of her car - and the mirror mounting point snapped as it scuffed. So we get the bike up, I give her my info, and I go to ride it home. No front brake lever, and a stub for a right foot peg. No biggie...I go to reach for the handlebars and OW...something isn't quite right. I start it up and ride it home anyway, and call the wife to get me to the hospital. Yup, broken collar bone. You know it's bad when the Orthopedic guy looks at the x-ray and goes "Wow, that's impressive!"

Three months later it's finally back to normal...just in time for winter. I missed most of last fall's riding season.

Needless to say - this winter needs to end because it's been too long!

It's good you got back to normal.

A coworker today riding an Electraglide put his foot down while turning into the parking lot this morning. His leg snapped like a twig. They got him on a stretcher and his foot was pointing to the side. Hurt just to look at.

03-26-2005

It had been one of the most calm and easy aggressive rides to date. Warp2, Bartimus, M1combat and I takled the infamous Spars up into Prescott AZ. After the ride up we had a good lunch and joked about how nice the ride had been, how light the traffic and how smooth and easy it had been to drop into a rythm the whole way. After lunch Warp2 and I decided we had enough time to head back down the same way we hadcome. The ride back was just as good as the ride up. We pulled into the usual Chevron for something to drink and to joke abit. Joked about the lack of chicken strips on my tires and that we hadn't really needed to go real fast to enjoy the ride. All set we hit the road home again. Things were good. Leapfrogging slower traffic as we came to it with care and ease. Came upon a truck towing a boat at about 50 in a 65, Warp2 waits as we had been for the dotted line and then makes his pass, I follow. As I straighten the bike up from the lane change lean it happens. The rear end launches upwards, I am looking down at the road as the bars start to swap back and forth. As the rear comes back down the bars are no going lock to lock and I can feel the rear of the bike drifted way left. Instant second of contact before I loose feel of the bike. Back hits first with my arms and legs splayed. My right arm already at a bad angle. Tumble and roll, and slide until it seems I would never stop. Finally come to a rest on my back. Suprise finally floods through me as I take stock. Left hand good, same for both legs. Right hand, ok the fingers still move...but it all feels wrong. Glasses are askew and visor is gone, but helmet still feels secure. No drips..."man, you hangf in there we have paramedics on the way. Just stay calm..."

Thew EMT's and Hospital staff were great. All any of them could keep saying was how glad they were I was wearing full gear and that they hope I am up and riding again soon. Of the 6 accidents that came in that weekend, I was the highest rate of speed and the least injured, and the only street rider in full gear. I heard the staff gave the rest of the riders grief about their lack of gear.

I've had a couple accidents... more than my share. The latest one, over a year ago, was by far my worst, but not my most stupid moment (crashing without a helmet)

A pizza delivery guy pulled out of the parking lot in front of me.. didnt stop to look, cut the corner short and was taking a left.... on top of that, there were bushes next to the entrance blocking my view into the parking lot and his out of it. Now, more than anything i would like to blame him 100%... and for the most part... it was his wreckless driving that caused the accident, but as far as a rider, i take some responsibility.

How you ask? Lane position for the most part. Had I been riding the centerline, he may have had more time to see me, and I would have been able to swerve around to the left...

From where i was, riding the middle of the lane i didnt have the time to swerve to the left around the front of him... i thought about it when i saw him, but he didnt see me yet, and i was afraid to put myself directly in front of him and have him hit me dead on. So having nowhere else to go i grabbed onto some brakes, then he saw me and slammed on his brakes, stoppign right in front of me. More brakes for me... back locked up slid right into his driver side door, and got to feel what its like to fly.

Right over the top of the car, didnt even touch it...

take your left hand and put the palm of it covering your mouth and your fingers covering your right eye.... thats what hit the ground first when i landed. Yes i was wearing a helmet... THANK GOD.

my first reaction in any accident Ive ever been in... car, bike, my fault or theirs... has always been "is the other guy ok". I was back on my feet and walking around the front of his car before he even got out of his seatbelt... not really a smart move, but the adreneline was pumping like mad and i had a smile on my face from the whole Flying experience and that feeling you get when your like "YEAH... I JUST SURVIVED THAT!!"

The bike was totalled... forks werent even in one piece anymore.... just a total mess.

Only thing that really made me mad... after waiting 4 hours for a cop to show up, the first thing she said to me is "that your bike? you should move it off the side of the road. I could give you a ticket for that."

yeah, thanks

The slip on canister came loose from the header and dug into the asphault. It was a custom fit V&H SS2r. I noticed from my stuff that the front P-Clamp is missing so I can only guess that it came apart somewhere between Prescott and the point the canister came off. The P clamp helped hold the headpipe steady within the canister, I used quicksteel as a gasket where the canister and headpipe connected then short exhast springs from the canister to the P-clamp which was then attatched at the stock mounting point for the exhaust. With the P-clamp gone the spirngs had nothing to hold on to so tension was lost. I did a tug test at M1combat's place in Prescott and everything was still tight and present, then we left for home.

Mikel,
Sorry to hear of your spill, hope you recover fast. My elbow is half plastic and steel, has been for 29 years, and I still have one of the most wicked hammers and sidearm frisbee throws in San Diego. So you'll be fine in time, technology has gotten a lot better since they put my elbow in.

Your story gave me the willies. I know that sinking feeling when you know you are going down. Time stands still, and you have enough time to figure out that you're about to biff hard and life as you knew it is about to change for a while, and you can only hope it's a short while. It's amazing how long it feels like it takes to happen, even though it's over in seconds.

Get well fast. I'll see you in a few weeks at Springfast, I assume?

Al

Thought I would throw this one out there. I had my first close call with a cager yesterday. Guy in a big white Dodge towing a boat attempted to pull out into me t-bone style. I throttled up and was past him before he knew what was going on.
Have I ever mentioned how much I love being able to throw my bike around?
