All,

Hello, a new Buell owner and new rider here. I just picked up a 2008 Lightning SCG a few weeks ago. Experiencing starting issues. Long story short I drive ~1000 miles, started the bike, took a test spin, drove it onto the trailer, drive ~1000 miles home. On the way back we ran into some snow. Bike is on a trailer. A few miles from home we took the bike and truck through a manual car wash. Hand held hose with soapy water and rinse were used on the bike (no pressure wash) to clear away road salt and dirt.

Back home and the bike won't start. Battery is up, fuses check out, lights and instrument cluster work. Bike turns over but does not start. I smell gas.

I'm not a mechanic. I understand the need fuel, air and spark. I smell fuel (added a bit of heet to address any potential water issues), I temporarily removed airbox and filter. No joy. Bike has been sitting for ~2 weeks. My assumption is any poor grounding issues relating to water would not be an issue at this point.

Ground? Fuse? Relay? Bad coil? My gut says it is an electrical issue based on history and symptoms. Gas odor after turning over but no burn. Bike never gives any impression that the fuel is being burned.

Looking for some input on what my next logical steps should be.

Thanks

Try pulling the front cyl spark plug wire and put in another plug and see if you get spark. If so, the plugs in the bike might have become fouled and need cleaning or replacement.

If no spark, need to start at the beginning. I would start with checking the fuses, then swapping the relays. They are both the same. On to ohming the coil, and so on

My first guess (!) is the wash may have affected the ignition somewhat, fouling the plugs.

If you haven't already done so, get the service and electrical manuals. Invaluable.

Hope this helps, Dave
