I finally purchased a 2008 Buell XB12SS today. 6k miles. It has a few issues I’m trying to figure out. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I’ll fill in everything that I know in chronological order.....

Previous owner installed an EBR Race ECM when he installed the DandD exhaust and KN filter.
When he installed the ECM the cel is always on and it threw a code 36.
The stock ecm was reinstalled and no codes
EBR stated to change fan
Fan was replaced with a new fan.
Still code 36 with EBR ecm
Still no code with stock ecm
Fan cycles and works as it should.
Previous fan worked as it should also.
EBR stated that there must be s bad fan ground or bad ECM ground.

So today I met the owner an hour south of the Wisconsin border. He drove about an hour in 32 degree weather with the bike in the back of the truck.
When he started it up the front cylinder was not firing. We let it run quite a while but it didn’t ever fire. Tried both ecm’s. No change.

I brought it home, picking up two new stock plugs along the way.

I changed both plugs. The plugs I took out were corroded, especially the front, and both were very black.

After changing the plugs it started right up and hit on both cylinders. The idle is pretty erratic, which may be part of the race ecm??? But it also misses and backfires a little bit.

I also noticed some strange electrical glitches. Sometimes the turn signals flash, sometimes they just come on solid. Sometimes the low beam headlight doesn’t work at all. Sometimes it works with the key on and engine off but goes off when the engine is running. Sometimes it works fine. It does the electrical glitches and the backfires with both ecm’s. The backfires are generally when decelerating after revving (after-fire) and the missing seems to be more at lower Rpm’s. It revs up nicely.

The cel is always on with the race ecm. Not with the stock. I pulled the codes with the jumper method and the race ecm. Some of the codes are not in any list that I’ve found. Here are the codes:

36 cooling fan
11 TPS
15 intake air temp sensor
33 Fuel pump
54 ECM failure
34 ????
37 ????

I got frustrated, stopped messing with the electrical, and did a bunch of cosmetic stuff today as well. Added license holder, removed tail lift, added plate lights, installed mirrors, added reflective decals to the rear wheel.

I’m not sure how the fan ground could be bad? The fan works.

How do I check the ecm ground?

Any thoughts on any of this? I love the bike. It was exactly what I was looking for, just trying to figure out the electric gremlins. Thanks in advance for an help or suggestions!

Remove air box cover and throttle body black rubber intake boot. Clean both sides of throttle plate with clean lint free rag spray with throttle body cleaner.remove electrical plug and both screws of IAC and remove clean inside of IAC port.I usually stuff a rag down the throttle body when cleaning IAC with throttle body spray can and Q tips. Inspect IAC O-ring lube with Vaseline or motor oil. Put everything back together and perform a TPS Reset. The thread below this one a link shows a picture of a 1/8 black cap on the fitting make sure it is there.https://youtu.be/n2F4m2rppPA

Thanks! I went through the system front to back and cleaned all connections. I found a loose coil wire. I also found a defective turn signal flasher relay. I'll pick one of those up today. The bike is actually running perfectly now, however, the EBR ECM still has a ton of codes showing, including the 36 fan code, which the fan is new and no issues. The stock ecm works fine and shows no codes but I know I can't run that due to the pipe and air box. I think the EBR ECM is faulty. I wish they'd swap it out for me but I'll probably have to get a different one. Thanks, Dave

Remember the codes are stored in each of the ECM. Clear the codes and maybe you might be good.

With ECM droid you could clear and mask the fan trouble light code. Perhaps the code written for that ECM fan parameters was wrong when it supposed to put on trouble code. Heck you can hear the fan run.

Thanks! Yeah, Everything seems to be working perfectly with both ecm's. The fan cycles as it should. The stock ecm shows no cel at all. The ebr race ecm immediately lights up the cel and always has the same 7 or 8 codes in it. It's like they don't clear. I was under the impression that the 2008 and up should clear once the condition isn't present? I'm going to order a cable and download software, I was just under the impression that they were self-clearing once the condition was gone. Thanks.

On all fuel injection Buells, the codes will remain in memory for up to 50 starts. If the condition to trigger the CEL occurs again, the counter resets to 50. One it reaches zero it is cleared out, or you can use ECMspy or similar software to manually do it.
