I'm having a problem with my bike I bought three weeks ago and barely made it home with. It was running fine when I got it but when down hill very fast. My problem is I'm throwing a code 15 temp too high/ short to ground. I have replaced the air intake temp sensor no luck. New ignition cause that went bad on day three. Also replaced 02 sensor it was throwing a code and now there is no code. From what I gather the AIT is grounded threw the ecm. I have gone over all my grounds cleaned and used die electric grease on them. Nothing has changed. Don't know where to start but would really like to take this bike for a ride and it is killing me that no matter what I have done it doesn't idle and low rpms cough threw the intake and spudder. Also on deceleration bike seems to cut

My afv is also 139.5% from what I have read that is really high

Time to take a step back and formulate a plan of checks/repairs.

I'm guessing you have access to ECMspy or similar. I hope you have a service manual. If not, having both on hand would be step 1.

While doing routine stuff on my X-1 for some reason or other, I noticed that the branch of the main harness that the AIT sensor plugs into was chaffing against the cyl head. Might do to check for harness chaffing/wear between the sensor and the ECM.

An AFV of 139.5% is really high. It should be somewhere in the 95-105 area, depending on the individual bike and home area. Given the reading and the bikes age, the intake manifold gaskets most likely need replacement. Also worth checking the condition of the injector O rings. Basically looking about to eliminate any possible intake leaks.

Just because of the running issues, one thing I would do is perform the test in the service manual to see if an injector is leaking. Page 4-111 in my manual.

Let us know how it goes. Don't forget to reset the AFV to 100 when finished. Hope this helps, Dave

I have buelltooth and ecm droid. I am very new to this and just figuring out things out. The funny thing is the sensor is reading the right temperature! I am just getting ready to work on the bike. I will go over those things you mentioned today.

So I checked the volts at the pigtail on the air intake sensor I get 5.11 volts. Also the same where the wire goes in to the computer. Is this right? I don't know if temp matters on this but it's 80°F

Ah, good news and bad.

The Buell ECM uses a 5V reference signal to the sensors, so a 5.11V reading is within limits of your ECM and DVOM.

The IAT (proper name intake air temperature sensor) is a thermistor - the internal resistance changes as its temperature changes. IF the voltage at pin 10 at the grey ECM connector is 5.11V, with the IAT connected, at 80 deg F, the reference signal is 'leaking' to ground somewhere. The proper voltage at pin 10, with the IAT connected at 80 deg F should be in the area of 3.7V. A voltage of 5.1V, with the system working as it should, will indicate an air temp below -4 deg F.

Also, might check the new IAT with the DVOM. At 80 deg F, the IAT resistance should be in the area of 25K-28K ohms. Actually, 23.6K at 86 deg F, 37.2K ohms at 68 deg F. And the above voltage and ohms readings can vary by as much as 20% up or down and still be in spec.

Ok well it turned out I had a bad AIT that was brand new. Got a new one and that problem is fixed

Hello Akbuell and Leftsidemetal. I've been lurking around here off and on for quite a while because of a S3T I've been hoping to get running. I had similar problem as Leftsidemetal. Eventually my Buell wouldn't start at all. I now believe that I was running the bike with way too much oil because of a miss-marked dipstick and it caused the AIT sensor to get coated with oil. Can this be cleaned or should I just get a new one? Where do you get a new one. The Harley shops around me don't have them and can't get them. If that's the case everywhere is there a way to eliminate sensors all together. This stuff irritates me. Thanks, Jack

The part number for the intake air sensor for an '01 X-1 is 62115-99Y. Yours is most likely the same. Try the local H-D dealer with the part number in hand, and see what happens. The Y suffix probably identifies it as a Buell part, so you may not have any luck, even though (in my opinion) it will be the same for an FI Sportster. Also, given the source for a lot of the Buell FI system is from a 5 litre Ford FI V 8, there may be something at the local NAPA store.

All that being said, for the short term solution, get hold of Lance at St Paul H-D. He will be able to help. And check in the Old School section for info on the St Paul H-D Buell specific web page.
