Hello all! It has been awhile since I have been back. It seems as though I have an issue with a tick coming from my front cylinder. Here's the long story (or jump to TLDR)

My bike shredded a belt on the interstate (it was an old belt and it was probably it's time) and as you all might know, in order to replace the belt you have to separate the engine block from the frame to slip the belt in between.

I also noticed I had a blown head gasket, so I replaced that while I had the frame off the engine block. It was a new style of head gasket from what I was familiar with (had built in O-rings?)

When I put the bike back together and went to fire her up, I noticed a very loud metallic screech coming from the front cylinder. I turned the bike over maybe 30 rotations in the next couple days trying to pinpoint the issue.

Fearful that it was the piston tearing away at the cylinder wall, I took the bike apart again.

To my easement, it turns out that it was a compression leak at the head gasket. I had put the new head gaskets on with new O-rings, which weren't required because as mentioned before the new gaskets had built in O-rings. This created a leak that resulted in such a high-pitched squeal that it sounded like a metallic screech.

Well upon lifting the frame off of the engine block I had a mishap. I forgot to unplug the tri-connector on the wire that runs down under the ignition coil behind the rear cylinder. I ended up ripping the wires from the plug and perhaps damaging the connection at the ignition coil or where ever said wire goes. So I replaced the head gasket correctly this time and put it back together.

After I had it back together, went to fire it up and it turned over 100 times and would just not fire. Not even a puff. I tried figuring out what was wrong with it for a week. Check the carburetor, checked the plug wires, checked the plugs. Everything was fine. I killed the battery a few times from turning it over so many times, but I have a Jr. Charger so that kept me going.

Frustrated, I caved in and had a shop look at it. They charged my battery, plugged it in, and it started up no problem. They charged me $80 and sent me on my way. However, now the bike has a loud tick in the front cylinder.

*TLDR (too long didn't read)*
Herein lies my current issue. I have a loud tick in the front cylinder. Sounds like it's coming from the bottom, towards the crankcase. The shop said it sounded like it might be a lifter. Being familiar with my own clumsiness, I am hoping I might have put the lifter rods in the opposite places, resulting in a tick from the valves? *fingers crossed... maybe*

I have the frame mostly disconnected from the engine and the engine on blocks. I'm getting ready to fully disconnect the engine and lift the frame tomorrow. I noticed when I drained the oil that it smelled fume-y, like it had fuel in it. I'm not sure what oil that his fuel in it looks or smells like, but it smelled like fuel and looked normal... pretty dirty actually for being new oil. So I am thinking perhaps a leak in the piston rings? I haven't replaced those yet.. but plan on it tomorrow.

So there's my story, looking for any and all input.

Keep on keepin' on, talk soon.

It may be something as simple as an exhaust leak.

Are you sure your muffler is tight to the brackets?

So I took the bike apart and looked everything over.

All the gaskets were fine but I replaced them.
I couldn't see anything wrong with the piston rings but I replaced those as well.
I thought I may have switched the push rods on accident but they were in the correct order as well.

I replaced all the components according to torque specifications.
New exhaust manifold gaskets and made sure the manifold was properly mated to the cylinder.
Put new oil in it and fired her up.
Started like a champ but still has the tick.
It's raining today but tomorrow will be sunny. I'm going to take it for a nice mellow cruise around town and see if she will maybe quite down.

It might be a slightly collapsed lifter. Try some Seafoam in the oil, maybe 1/4-1/2 can. Run it for a while. See if it quiets down.. If it does ride it for a bit, maybe 50 miles or so and then change the oil and filter.

Are you positive you have the pushrods back in the right hole. The ones with the redish band go the the exhaust.

I rode it for a bit, maybe 15 miles, and the tick went away. When it was cold I noticed some white smoke coming out of the exhaust.

Must have been built up oil or old fuel. It's been a while since she has ran. After she warmed up the smoke stopped.

Seemed to be running fine during the ride though. Throttle responsive, no strange noises.

However I noticed that the oil still smells fumey, like it has gas in it. And the oil level hasn't dropped yet.

I put in 2 quarts, which is what the manual says it takes. But the oil level still seems higher than usual. Maybe a pinch in the oil feed tube at the bottom of the oil reserve?

P.S. the push rods were in the correct order. triple red band for exhaust, single brown band for intake.

Since you have a carb, that means you have a fuel shut off valve, and a float and float needle. If you don't always shut the fuel off, and the float needle leaks, gasoline can drain into the intake and down into the engine.

If that is what has happened, might do to ride for 20 mins or so, and do a complete oil and filter change. Add fresh oil in the amount specified in the owners manual, check your level, and ride on. Don't forget to shut off the fuel at the end of the day. And if you do normally shut the fuel off and have this condition, the valve may be leaking.

Hope this helps, Dave

Thanks Akbuell.

I actually started doing this with the petcock today. I plan on putting new oil and filter on it on Friday.

I'll keep you all updated.

So far she is running great. : D
