Hello all! It has been awhile since I have been back. It seems as though I have an issue with a tick coming from my front cylinder. Here's the long story (or jump to TLDR)

My bike shredded a belt on the interstate (it was an old belt and it was probably it's time) and as you all might know, in order to replace the belt you have to separate the engine block from the frame to slip the belt in between.

I also noticed I had a blown head gasket, so I replaced that while I had the frame off the engine block. It was a new style of head gasket from what I was familiar with (had built in O-rings?)

When I put the bike back together and went to fire her up, I noticed a very loud metallic screech coming from the front cylinder. I turned the bike over maybe 30 rotations in the next couple days trying to pinpoint the issue.

Fearful that it was the piston tearing away at the cylinder wall, I took the bike apart again.

To my easement, it turns out that it was a compression leak at the head gasket. I had put the new head gaskets on with new O-rings, which weren't required because as mentioned before the new gaskets had built in O-rings. This created a leak that resulted in such a high-pitched squeal that it sounded like a metallic screech.

Well upon lifting the frame off of the engine block I had a mishap. I forgot to unplug the tri-connector on the wire that runs down under the ignition coil behind the rear cylinder. I ended up ripping the wires from the plug and perhaps damaging the connection at the ignition coil or where ever said wire goes. So I replaced the head gasket correctly this time and put it back together.

After I had it back together, went to fire it up and it turned over 100 times and would just not fire. Not even a puff. I tried figuring out what was wrong with it for a week. Check the carburetor, checked the plug wires, checked the plugs. Everything was fine. I killed the battery a few times from turning it over so many times, but I have a Jr. Charger so that kept me going.

Frustrated, I caved in and had a shop look at it. They charged my battery, plugged it in, and it started up no problem. They charged me $80 and sent me on my way. However, now the bike has a loud tick in the front cylinder.

*TLDR (too long didn't read)*
Herein lies my current issue. I have a loud tick in the front cylinder. Sounds like it's coming from the bottom, towards the crankcase. The shop said it sounded like it might be a lifter. Being familiar with my own clumsiness, I am hoping I might have put the lifter rods in the opposite places, resulting in a tick from the valves? *fingers crossed... maybe*

I have the frame mostly disconnected from the engine and the engine on blocks. I'm getting ready to fully disconnect the engine and lift the frame tomorrow. I noticed when I drained the oil that it smelled fume-y, like it had fuel in it. I'm not sure what oil that his fuel in it looks or smells like, but it smelled like fuel and looked normal... pretty dirty actually for being new oil. So I am thinking perhaps a leak in the piston rings? I haven't replaced those yet.. but plan on it tomorrow.

So there's my story, looking for any and all input.

Keep on keepin' on, talk soon.
