Thanks to XBimmer for posting the following in another thread:
quote:Ok so I've decided to use the Melling JB-2079 lifters after doing some measuring. There are only three differences in dimensions between my HD B lifters and the Chevy Mellings and two of those could be wear related on the stock B lifter. As posted the GM lifter has a reduced size oil hole in the pushrod cup but since the cups measure identically otherwise I'm going to swap them for the stock cups which are broken in to the pushrods anyway. The other differences could be the reason for my engine noisiness. Both internal springs measured significantly (0.02") shorter with the check ball spring very weak in comparison to the newer part. Secondly, the roller clearance to the body on the B was .017" which compares to the measurement of the Sealed Power lifter, as opposed to .012" for the Melling. This is one of the issues the HD forum members complain about with the C lifters, excessive roller play, and I don't know whether my B lifters' roller clearance was due to 90K wear or not, but it is what it is. So the Mellings are going in and I'm comfortable with that, and the fact that I'll save $80 over factory replacement C's.
I got a set of Mellings at auto zone, and they were indistinguishable from what I removed from my (presumed stock but I bought it used) 2007 XB12X. I just swapped the old cups over also, they are trivial to disassemble. Not sure if these are the same as the tuber lifters, if somebody with an XB and Tuber parts book could see if both use the same HD part, then we can likely safely assume the Melling would work fine in both as well. (And I strongly suspect the Melling's *are* the HD parts...) |

Also, Autozone had those lifters for $10 each, though they weren't stocked (so I had to come back a couple days later for in store pickup). |

And from one of my own posts I dug up:
quote: Melling JB-2079 http://www.autozone.com/external-engine/valve-lift er/melling-valve-lifter/126771/ Identical except for the small cup the pushrod rides in, the hole diameter is slightly different. The cups are only held in by a spring clip, so it is easy to pop out the old cups and swap them over to the new lifters. And that is probably better anyway, as the old pushrods have already mated to the old lifter cups anyway. And because it probably doesn't actually matter much what the hole diameter is in the first place. I switched the cups just for peace of mind. Working great.

To answer the question about the lifters being different or the same. The numbers are different ,but it probably would be best to compare them side by side. From the parts books i have, 98 S1 part no: 18526-89 04 XB part no: 18538-99B |

On twin motorcycles website it says the 04 xb lifters are also suitable for all tube frame models from 2000 and up. |

You guys are great, I love being able to use other less expensive or alternate parts. I remember on my old MOTO GUZZi the starter was the same as a Fiat at half the price. A little research goes a long ways. Again thanks |
