Greetings, 99 X1 Lightning. Was running rough like bad fuel, cutting out, restarting, no warning light. Finally quit, would turn over but no start. Ckd the usual suspects, Batt/cables/fuses. Then fuel filter and flow. All good. Took plug out and put on head, no spark. Unplugged ECM and replugged in (gotta try that right?)but then all went dead! Not a click. Batt still turns on but no ignition. Before I commit to a $200 ECM (had 10 yr old race ECM in)how can I be sure it is the ECM? And not a hidden fuse or relay? thanks!

Something doesn't add up, so for sure keep looking before dropping major coin on a new ECM.

The original symptoms could be the CPS (cam position Sensor, whatever it is that tells the ECM when to fire a spark).

The new problem could be a bent pin, or there could be a short in the wiring harness that you aggravated when removing the ECM, or maybe caused a fuse to blow.

And I think the ignition circuit *is* on a relay, though I haven't checked the schematic to be sure. So a bad relay that was intermittent but that is now toast might be one thing that could explain both symptoms.

But this is all wild speculation.

+1 on the relay check. If you still have lights when turning the switch on, then that relay is still good. Just swap them. If you now have no lights, but the engine turns over, the relay is suspect. A new relay would be the best check, as a dodgy one 'might' work in one position and not the other, depending on amp load.

Thank you for the two suggestions. The lights do go on with the key. So from your suggestion I can assume not a relay? BTW, where is the relay for the ECM and where is the fuse for the ECM? Does not appear to be in my fuse box (all are ok) or listed in my basic manual. Pins appear ok by eye when I look at them.

Did you check all the connections going both into and out of the coil?

Actually, my bad. Lights coming on means the accessory side of the ign switch and the rest of the lighting circuit works. Sorry about that.

The relays are identical, and can be swapped one for the other. Unlikely, but they could have both gone bad at the same time. Checking with new is easy and not expensive.

Are things like the sidestand switch jumpered/clutch switch working/neutral light coming on? Would do to check them and make sure the 'safety network' is working as it should. Bypassing the ign switch while troubleshooting is not a bad idea.

The service manual has good troubleshooting trees.

Thank you. I don't know where the relays are located except guessing with the two relay blocks located next to the fuse box on the left side under seat. Will try swapping or replacing them. I was told that there were no fuses or relays to the ECM as it runs direct power off the batt. So I have conflicting info here. I don't have service manual. Not being cheap here other than trying not to purchase an ECM for $320 and having it not be the problem. So more in a diagnosis mode to eliminate causes. I did not check connections in/out of the coil. Will do that next. Thank you for your help and assistance.
