I'm having an issue with my bike once it gets hot. It's usually after riding on the highway a while and then when I get off into traffic or if I'm stuck in traffic for a while. I can cruise fine but it acts up when I come to lights or in <10 mph traffic. The idle will studder and drop very low, usually to the point where it shuts off. Usually requires me to give it throttle to keep it on. Also when holding the throttle steady around 1.5-2k it wants to either slowly rev up or the revs will jump and drop, it happens at low rpm riding too, it will get jerky. I thought it might be the ignition overheating and replaced that, still the same. Now I think it has to do with the fan. I sat it outside the shop and let it run for 20 mins or so, revving occasionally to get it to temp. When it did it again I checked voltage at the battery, still fine. No fan, assuming because it was sitting still. When I cut the key off, the fan kicked on. I came back a few mins later, checked again, same issue, this time it blew the fan fuse. Which is a first, took the fuse out, ran it again, same issues. So I'm either thinking overheating somewhere, a bad temp sensor or bad fan. I'm going to run home and setup my ECMSPY. I will upload a video of what it was doing in a bit and check for codes tonight.

Any other ideas of what it may be and how to check it?

Ok what year and bike type.Fan motor or fan wiring issue is wear I would first start.

Whoops. Its an 05' XB9SX. I'm thinking the same, hopefully can hookup the ECMSPY tonight and eliminate any other issues.

I think it has something to do with the fan drawing too much power

Fuses are there to protect the wire not the component.
If it dosn't the wire becomes the fuse.

I don't think the fan is the issue.

Start with new plugs and a by the book idle adjustment and TPS reset. Then I'd use ECMSpy to check the head temp sensors by watching it for wierdness as the bike warms up in the driveway and when it is misbehaving. Not so much because I think that is the problem, but because it could be, and it can be checked with no dismantling.

Then I'd look for what I think the problem really may be... a leak in the intake somewhere. You might be able to chase that down by using a tube on a propane torch to probe for leaks in the intake (if it sucks propane instead of air you will hear the idle change).

If it comes with backfiring, then I'd be looking towards cam position sensor.

A quicker way instead of propane is spray wd 40 on the seal areas.Twin motorcycles has video using this method. Saves on the propane setup and time and $$$

And leaves the intake outside cleaner then when you started! : )

I don't find WD40 that useful as a lubricant, but it sure is a nice cleaner.

Haven't had the chance to really dive into this yet but figured I'd update anyways. New to ECM bikes and was having trouble with ECMSPY connecting. I think the battery was too low.

I checked intake leaks initially and got nothing, unless it's only happening when its hot and things are expanding. Swapped plugs around the same time as I checked for intake leaks. I initially thought it was the CPS because I had an issue with my sportster one time that had a similar issue plus backfiring.

I'm really thinking it's the fan, because that is when the issue starts. Its always when I've been in traffic and the fan is on or when I've just gotten off the highway and the fan kicks on. Plus the fuse blowing just says its drawing too much. My buddy who owned the bike before me said the fan would rarely come on and only when he really got on it, but he said he only really rode it at night. I ordered a SPAL fan off amazon, should be here Friday. Going to do the swap then.
