I have a 2010 Long with the corresponding fan logic - fan comes on above and shuts off below 14mph, unless the engine gets really hot and then the fan comes on regardless of speed. For the past couple of days, the fan stopped doing this. Now, it doesn't come on at all when I'm riding, but if I fire the bike up from cold and let it idle until it warms all the way up, the fan comes on.

I suspect the engine temperature sensor (or its wire) is faulty, and that the fan itself is okay, given that I can get the fan to run in my driveway. Any reason to doubt this?

For more backstory, this is a new fan as of a year ago, after one of the rubber air box vibration dampers came loose and lodged in the old fan, damaging its bearings. Since the new fan was installed, the fan fuse has blown twice - once about 60 miles after the fan was installed, and again two days ago. The first time, replacing the fuse got the fan working normally. This time, I'm faced with the odd behavior mentioned in the first paragraph.

Comments welcome but not crucial. I intend to replace the ETS and then let y'all know if that solved the issue. Just trying to build up the knowledge base!

Just thinking out loud... a malfunctioning ETS wouldn't cause the fan fuse to blow.

You may have a fan wire in the harness that is chaffed.
You should also check for any oil spray that may be coming from the engine/rocker box area and getting into the fan motor.

Correct. The ETS wouldn't blow a fuse, but it would prevent the fan from coming on by telling the bike the engine is cooler than it really is.

Hopefully not a chafed wire on the harness because that's inconvenient to track down, but I certainly can't rule it out. I'm also expecting to replace the vehicle speed sensor given the malfunctioning speedometer.

Back to the fuse. Yes, a chafed wire is the most likely explanation, but if it continues to do that approximately once a year the easiest thing to do is just keep spare fuses in the toolkit. I would like my bike to be perfect, but there are practical limits to the amount of time and money I can throw at it.

I'll post again after the bike is back from the shop and I'm back from a vacation.

Verdict from the shop is, the ECM has gone bad. Vehicle speed sensor checked out okay, so a bad ECM would explain my malfunctioning speedometer and intermittent CEL as well as an inop fan. They said that the Buell ECMs are not as reliable as other bikes because the sensors are grounded through the ECM rather than via relay to the chassis.

Good news is, they had an ECM in stock! They never have Buell parts in stock! Bad news is, the ECM took the fan out with it when it went, so they're still waiting for one to show up. They tried plugging the fan straight in to power and it wouldn't come on.

At this point I just want the bike back. I'm missing too much riding!

I do wish that, if my bike were going to crap out like this anyways, it had done it before EBR went under so I could've got one of Erik's ECMS. Oh well.

Sent you PM.

I have faith that EBR will be back. In the meantime, you can get new EBR ECMs from Intelligent Design Solutions

Saga continues. I've got the bike back with a new ECM and new cooling fan, but suspect they didn't give me the latest flash on the ECM. See here: http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/384 2/766335.html?1436327730
