Beginning on last October I went out to fire up the bike to head to work and it started but died right away. I kept trying to start it and it would start every time I hit the button but just dies right away. Now that the 6' of snow is gone I pulled the plugs out and replaced. Didn't help. Any thoughts? Thanks in advance.

So is the motor spinning but not firing? Or does everything go kinda dim and all clicky? I'd drain and put in fresh gas too.

Its starts right up everytime I hit the starter but dies right away. I understand about the bad gas but it first started in October when I had been riding frequently all summer.

Hmmm. TPS Reset? Crank Position Sensor test? Does the 2004 have a sidestand safety switch? Head temp sensor?

Maybe This will help. If I give it gas it will stay running. Very poorly and it pops and farts and flames shoot up out of the air intake. I think I need to just bring it into the dealer. I'm not savy enough to dick around with it.

Just for fun, try removing/reinstalling the fuses, relays, ect. Adding some dielectric grease wouldn't hurt.

And try swapping the relays one for the other.

Sometimes corrosion builds builds up on the blades, and relays can get into a pre-fail mode where they kinda work, but not well.

Can't hurt, and only takes a few minutes.

Hope this helps, Dave

1)Have battery checked out by local bike shop or battery s plus.Clean and make sure the battery terminals are good and tight.A loose connection will cause ecm to sensor issues
2)a bad o2 sensor can also cause hicups and backfire thru the intake.
3)all of the above has happen too me

Inspect battery positive and negative cables where they connect to battery. One of the wires had cold worked or back in fourth from seat pressure. also make sure the connections are clean and tight.

Hi Guys,

I just recently purchased a 2004 Buell Lightning XB12s with 2042 miles on it and I am having these similar issues. The previous owner purchased the bike new and it pretty much sat in his garage. He said he had it serviced every year at a local HD dealer. When I purchased it the bike started right up and I rode it home. I purchased plates and insurance a couple days after i got it home and when I went to start it I got the same issue as described above. I replaced the plugs and the battery but still no luck. My father-in-law came over and tried to help but no luck. He did notice that the bike had a race exhaust and also a race ECM. I called the previous owner to ask if he had modified the bike or if he ever experienced this issue before and he said "NO".

I'm really sorry about making this sound like a novel but wanted to give you guys as much detail as possible.

Go back and check battery connections. Better yet remove the battery and clean the grounds put a little dielectric grease at those connections. Make sure those reinstalled connections are good.?? You do have fuel and are those spark plug wires are on good.

Well, gotta start checking for possible problems one at a time until you find what's wrong.

Check bike thoroughly (including inside airbox) for mice and other vermin, make sure fuel is all fresh fuel, put in fresh oil and transmission fluid (not your problem, but you should do it anyway) and go over battery connections and make sure battery is fully charged. Those are the "free" things to do (because you have to do them anyway).

Then you can try replacing plugs, as "almost free". Some work (either fussing doing it through the top, or rotating the engine down), but not a huge job. Plugs will easily last for 20k miles in "normal use", but a bike that was started now and then but never really run very hard will almost be guaranteed to have fouled plugs.

Sputtering and backfiring when hot can be a cam position sensor, but that would be odd for a low mile bike.

Oh, and I would also check charging system on a bike that sat a lot. My thinking is that it would be easy to kill a battery like that, then somebody just decides to jump start the bike off of a running car, which can (and probably will) kill the bikes voltage regulator.

DAMHIK. I did this myself to my M2. I now understand why that was stupid, but I'll leave that for another thread if anyone cares. Short answer is that it is OK to jump a bike from a car, provided the car is never running when connected to the bike.

Ok well I'm back sorry for the delay. I was out of the country came back and did everything replaced all fluids, new set of plugs, battery and checked all the ground terminals. It still won't start. It turns over and wants to get going but it just dies. Any other suggestions?

How do i reset the TPS? I don't have the manual so any info or instructions would be appreciated.
