It started hiccuping like it was not getting fuel & cutting off. It is getting fuel because in can smell it and the fuel pump is running. The starter is turning but will start to fire and cut off. I have new plugs & the gap is correct.

When it was hiccuping, was it also backfiring?

Could be crank position sensor, could be shorted wire somewhere in harness.

On an S bike, it is easy to get a nick (possibly near microscopic) that will short if that ecm cable bundle goes over the battery terminal. The bundle around the steering neck is another place where all the XB's can have issues.
