When the electrical starter switch is depressed, the starter does not start the engine. There is a high speed whirling sound from the starter/solenoid assembly. No engine crank. I put my mechanic’s stethoscope on the starter/solenoid assembly. I do hear what I think is the solenoid plunger returning to home after let off of the starter switch. Not sure how to diagnose/resolve the problem from here.
Tested the battery-12.73 v and 253 cca (what is the cca supposed to be on this original, stock HD battery?).
Ignition relay clicks on when engine run switch is switched on.
Was able to push and bump start it (when 160 miles from home) and ride home.
There is a bit of oil from a primary cover leak on the solenoid wire. Not sure if that may have some impact.
This is the seventh motorcycle I’ve owned, yet the first with an electric starter.
Any advice on how to proceed would be greatly appreciated. I do have an official factory manual and am a fair to middling mechanic.

Not often we have a bad starter around here, but I suppose it could be sticking.

Is the starter relay one of those off the shelf car part units? Or is it different?

All 4 of the relays in the fuse block and relay center are the original stock ones. I did swap them around, but that didn't resolve the non starter problem.
I know how to do a continuity test with a multi meter on a regular plug in or glass tube fuse. But I don't know how one would test a relay to ensure that it's working correctly.

You might try hitting it with more amperage. I've had stuck starters respond well to having a car battery hooked up in parallel to the bike's battery with real battery cables. Once it cranks, shut it down and remove the second battery. If it was just crust on the solenoid, the issue may clear up. 200 cca should be enough for this starter; the issue is not your battery. Your starter may be bad. You've examined the cable?

Starting w/the '08 XB's, 3 manuals are necessary: the parts manual, the service manual, and the electrical diagnostic manual, p/n 99493-08Y.

Pg 1-16 is the table for pinon gear does not engage. The first section is all battery, to charge/replace battery and check batt connections. The second section advises the problem could be 'poor sliding condition of spline teeth', the fix is to clean/replace pinion shaft or replace the overrunning clutch. All of the other probable causes involve the overrunning clutch, the fix is replacement. The final probable cause is worn teeth on the clutch hub- not likely IMHO.

Harleyelf- I hit it paralleled to my truck battery. No change. What is the cable you refer to that I should examine?

Akbuell-I assume the pages 1-16 you referred to are in the elec. diag. manual(which I don't own). I looked in my FSM on those pages, but didn't see the info. you sent down. See the pg 5-7 info.. Still digesting your advise.

Thanks to both of you guys for the advise.

Should I keep trying to diagnose the problem with the starter/solenoid still attached or remove for a bench test?

Is it unusual for this bike with 11,000ish miles to have this kind of starter problem?

Yes, page 1-16 is in the electrical manual.

Seems that given what you have already checked/done, putting the starter on the bench would be the next step.

A failure like this would be unusual, but not impossible .....

You are welcome for whatever benefit my experience has brought you. The cable I refer to is the big one from the battery. The last thing to try before pulling the starter is bypassing the button and relay and putting a stout jumper from the positive terminal of your battery and the terminal under the small wire on the starter. I doubt this is going to resolve your issue, but it will eliminate your wire harness and switch from suspicion.

Purchased an electrical diag. manual this morning. Started looking over the starter inop.section. You were right about the manuals Akbuell.

Problem solved. Overriding clutch failure at 11,250 miles. I did the removal and re-install of the solenoid/starter assembly. Repair cost $58 for the part and $60 for the rebuild labor. Sure feels good to have the Uly back on line. Thanks again all for the advise.

Starter problem, round two.
Same problem, hit starter button, nothing but whirl.
Pulled starter, had clutch sub assembly replaced, account washer failure in there.
I'm not liking these starter issues. Didn't think it would happen again.

Atc, I would suspect something else is the issue, and it is killing your starter clutch. This failure is pretty rare, but having it happen twice is astronomical.
