well i have a buell x1 lighting 2002 that i bought with 6800 miles on it. i put just over 500 on it and now it is having electrical issues. when i turn the key to on it lights up the speedometer like it is supposed to. however the circuit breaker clicks when it is turned to on. i looked for any exposed wires that would short out and could not find any. i took the battery off when inspecting it and moved most of the wires when i was inspecting them and when i put it back together it worked and even ran for 2 or 3 minutes but died and shorted out for no reason then and will not run again.

Now for the tricky part. both of the relays are good and none of the fuses are blown. i even replaced the ignition fuse despite it being ok. i would think if shorted out it should blow a fuse too or am i wrong?

the ignition switch did have problems but i made a make shift one using the wires from the old one and a standard switch so its not that.

i was wondering if anybody has had anything similar or any suggestions. should i break down and bring it to a shop? thanks in advance - Matt L

Matt:

Some here have had issues with the handlebar switches. Check both sides out.

The original ignition switch has some issues too. They get red hot and start to fry the contacts inside of them. As you found out, they can easily be bypassed.

Another thought is make sure that you have no chaffing going on in the wire looms at the front (head end) of your bike.

I'd also check and make sure your grounds are ok. There is a ground bus right above your battery and the other major ground is between your swingarm and the back side of your engine area.

Good luck with finding it. Get a shop manual for your bike too if you don't have one. Very valuable info in there.

Steve.

Twoseasons advice is a good place to start, esp concerning the grounds. Two other possibilities:

Check the sidestand switch. If still connected, unplug it and ground the two contacts in the wiring harness connector together. This bypasses the switch, and they are known to fail/get wonky and cause weird problems.

If that doesn't help, try unplugging the speed sensor at the connector under the battery tray. When mine failed, I had different symptoms, but may be worth a look.

BTW, what's the condition of your battery. These bikes are sensitive to low voltage.

Hope this helps. Dave

i also have issues with the right blinker blowing the accessories fuse so i know the left side handle bar switches are trouble but nothing is shorting out there. the trouble is with the rear right blinker and i plan on fixing it once i buy a new blinker. the right side switches seemed clean and no shorts (except for a dead spider) so i don't think the problem is there but at this point it could be anywhere i guess.

i checked all the grounds and they seem ok visually and with a multimeter. and my side stand switch is ok aswell because i checked it for continuity with it up and down and it tested normal.

I'm not quite sure which connection is for the speed sensor but I disconnected the two 3 pronged connectors under the battery and it still shorted out. is the speed sensor a different wire or did i get it?

and lastly its a new battery bought in july and test out at 12.48v when disconnected from the bike. I'm almost positive it is not a battery problem and i think its a wire or component shorting out my system when i turn the key (or in my case flip my switch).

thank you two seasons and akbuell. i appreciate the suggestions but none of them seemed to be the problem.

OK, a re-think on my part. If you don't have one, pls get a service manual. (Al at American Sport Bike is a good source) The most important tool in the box, IMO. Will quickly pay for itself.

There is a connection between the IGN and ACC circuits on the backside of the fuse box. Since you know of an issue w/the right turn signal, unplug the harness at the flasher, and see if that helps.

Static tests are good, but can lead you astray, as engine vibration can change things. Make sure the grounds and batt connections are clean, bright, and tight. I have checked grounds that looked/tested fine, but were loose when wiggled. Same w/the sidestand switch, which is easy enough to jumper around.

Since you are in there, pull the ECM connectors and look for corrosion. Can be an issue, as well as the base of the fuses and relays. Dielectric grease is your/my friend.

Have you tried swapping the relays one for the other? Perhaps the IGN relay is in a pre-fail mode.

Finally, check the B.R.A.N. There are Badwebbers in your area who I am sure would be willing to assist.

Please let us know how it goes, we WILL get this solved. Dave

Alright i checked the back of the fuse box For corrosion aswell as the ECM. No rust, no corrosion and it all looked connected tightly visually.

I actually tried swapping the relays when this first happened and no change. and i tested the relay and it clicks when i touch the 86 at 85 pins.

i do have a virtual copy of the manual but i will probably invest in a hard copy soon.

also what is the B.R.A.N.? sorry i'm new to this... and thank you Dave for your confidence

The work "Gadzooks" comes to mind; or perhaps "Sheese"!!! Multiple vehicles in need of loving care, and a hurricane on top of that! My thoughts are with you.

Let us know when things calm down, Dave
