I had this posted in the new to buell, but was told to also post it here, so ..

Tired of riding on the back, ready to ride my own. Unfortunately in grad school and can't afford much.

2001 Buell Blast: starts, runs and drives fine BUT the engine makes a clicking noise. Like a click,click,click that speeds up with the revs on cycle. Anyone know what it could be, as in an easy fix, or am I going to have to put money into this one?

If you're lucky, the hydraulic lifter is just clogged with dried oil from sitting and will not expand out to its full length every time the cam drops out from under it. Give the oil a shot of Marvel Mystery oil or some similar lubricant and see if it clears up. The exhaust pipe doesn't get too hot, you have plenty of power, and the power curve is smooth? If it turns into a bang-bang noise shut it down right away.

Stay away from ticking engines... motorcycle engine repairs are not as fun as working on your musclecar.

I'm with Froggy. If you haven't bought it yet, wait for one that sounds right. If the owner will allow you to tinker with it, a cup of Marvel should clear up gunked lifters within the first hour of use. Have the owner ride it for that hour - you don't want responsibility for the rebuild his neglect caused. If you're sure the clicking comes from under the pushrod tubes (stethoscope), the lifters are not hard to replace. From the head, however, would mean a valve job - no fun for a beginner.
