Hey guys i have a 2000 x1 lightning D&D exhaust race ecm and it is camed. I have recently developed a issue with it dieing on me after a few miles of riding and i come to a stop. It seems to shudder and shut off. It will restart but only under hard throttle and unless i keep on the throttle it will die again. I brought it to the dealer it was throwing a error code 33 fuel pump so they thought low pressure and the ecm was not strong enough to power it so they replaced the ecm and flashed it. The bike ran strong for about 10 miles and the ecm fried so they thought is was a faulty ecm and replaced it again and what do you know burned that one to. any insight would be great guys thanks matt |

That's the problem - they are not paid to think. "They" should have looked up the error code diagnostic procedure in the service manual and actually tested the fuel pressure. But then that's just what I think and I'm not a Harley tech. They're not charging you for 2 ECMs, are they? |

no i paid for one the bike is still there another ecm on order but the funny part is the two fried ecms wont even fire the bike now but as soon as the old race ecm goes in it fires right up and will run for a bit untill the engine gets nice and hot . there are no temp sonsor codes throwen eigther |

So they're planning to keep replacing the ECM until somehow it fixes itself? Amazing approach. How good is the battery? My money is on the head temp sensor even though there is no code. |

Only sure way I know to fry an ECM twice is a bad ground. Have you removed, cleaned up with a wire wheel, and replaced the ground cable to your battery? The bolt that connects it to the frame may have become loose or corroded. How about the cam position sensor? They fry and keep sort of working sometimes. It'll usually smell burnt under the cover plate. |

Thanks Guy These are both things i told the techs i thought were the issues but they seem to disregard me thoughts because it was not throwing thoes codes. so im going to go ahead and replace thoes things and clean up the grounds. I hope this fixes it because i truly love the bike even when it runs like shit. True bueller even the problems wont change that. |

If your tech disrespects you and disregards your suggestions, you need to find a new shop. Even car mechanics know that computers need good grounding or they die. My '99 S3 was in the shop three times for misfiring and they never looked at the cam position sensor because their heads were stuck up their code charts. Once I changed it myself, the problem vanished. |

Glad to see fellow buellers are helping me out. should i start at the ETS knowing this problem dose not start until after a couple miles when the engine gets hot at start up it idles great and revs up and down beautifully. when it is hot the and i come to a stop the rpm's reduce all the way to a stall and will not start again until the bike sits for 30 plus minutes |

The temperature sensor carries a wee tiny bit of current, and the cam position sensor carries serious amperage. Your ECM could not have been fried by the temperature sensor, nor would the temperature sensor ever shut down your spark. I would start with the main ground cable and cam position sensor. Drill the rivets out of the timing cover and you will find the under-plate is held on by screws. The timing cover is cosmetic; you needn't replace it at all if you don't want to. I use a Sportster cover. |

going down to harley today to get the sensor today. The other thing is the fuel pump primes but is very faint. it never has been that loud since i got the bike could this be a heat related issue. I still drive the bike every day to work and back its only 4 miles and i have no issues in that distance but any more it will act up and die out if i let off the throttle. |

"heat related" hummmmmmmmmm. check the routing of your fuel line, and replace your fuel filter if you havent already. im wondering if your fuel line is to close to the heads and getting vapor lock after it heats up. also wondering about your manafold gaskets. sux about the lazy aproach you got from the mechanics. seems like TROUBLE SHOOTING is a dying art with some folks. not good to just find out what failed, but WHY it failed!!! |
