I am new to the world of Buell. I bought a 2009 XB12XT Ulysses. The bike has a Special Ops exhaust. My concern is the back firing when down shifting. I've been told by several people this is caused by a lean condition. This could possibly damage the valves. I was also told when adding an after market exhaust to help this condition you should add a race ECM. Your helpful advice will be appreciated. I love my Buell and want her to run the best she can. |

I just went through the exact same experience. I went ahead and updated the air filter to K&N & then called up Eric Buell Racing to let them know that I needed the race ECM for my 09 Uly with custom exhaust & K&N air filter. Once I got the ECM, installed it, & did a TPS reset ... no more backfires. She sounds & runs beautifully now. |

The ECM is not cheap ... $250 @ erikbuellracing(dot)com. The air filter wasn't too terribly bad at around $64 on BuellParts(dot)net ... also available elsewhere I'm sure. I don't honestly know if the air filter is required or not, but it came highly recommended from multiple sources as it is much better quality than stock & increases airflow & resulting HP. |

Again thanks. I'll be ordering this to get her running good. Is this an easy install.. |

Both upgrades can be made relatively quickly & with few tools. I changed the ECM & did the TPS reset in a Barnes & Nobles parking lot, just prior to a ride to Southern Indiana, and my wrench experience is quite limited. I'm an engineer with a computer being my primary tool. When you get the new ECM from Erik Buell Racing it has the basic instructions of what you need to do. |

It's not a lean condition or likely to damage your valves. It is a rich condition with reversion sucking air up into the exhaust so it has oxygen enough to ignite. If it were a lean condition, there'd be no fuel to ignite. |

The solution is as described though, a fuel mapping specifically tuned for the new custom exhaust tract. |

Skip the air filter, get the Erik Buell Racing Race ECM for your bike, and enjoy http://www.erikbuellracing.com/store/models/xb12/x b12-preprogrammed-ecm.html It is the best $250 you can spend on your bike. |

You can always datalog and tune the fuel maps yourself. After 5 or so datalogging iterations, I've got maps that are perfectly matched for my setup (Drummer SS and K&N). That will likely cost you about $40 in the cable required. I have to admit, tuning is not for everyone. For someone looking for a turn-key experience, the Erik Buell Racing ECM is probably the best bet. |
