When I bought my 1999 X1, the previous owner tossed in a set of touring bars. So a couple months back, I picked up some new grips and finally got around to installing them tonight. I ran into two issues: 1. The locator holes on the touring bars don't match the stock holes on the X1 bars. The right is in almost a half inch further than the stock bars. The left side isn't even in the right place - it's on the back side of the bars. 2. The traction hand grips I picked up have an other issue. The the throttle grip is a quarter inch shorter than the original one I took off. I'll try to upload some pictures so you can see what I'm working with |

Left Grip is original, Right Grip is new replacement and shorter.
Can anyone tell from this photo if these are original Buell touring bars? |

They kinda look like S3T/Blast bars. You can either drill new locating holes or shave off the locating pins in the housings. What are you going to do wrt longer cables? |

On some other posts, I had asked if stock cables would work when swapping for the touring bars. Anyone that replied said the stock ones could work - I'd have to snip some zip ties and re-route them. After getting into the project, I was starting to wonder if these touring bars would work. I think I'm going to try to drill new locator holes. Having the new throttle grip a quarter of an inch shorter than the stock one surprised me - but near as I can tell, there is only one style of grip... |

Well it's back together with the touring bars on. Just glued on the left grip - so we'll see how more comfortable it is tonight. I also figured out the mystery of why the older throttle grip was a quarter in longer than the replacement. The locator hole on the touring bar is also a quarter inch inboard than on the stock bars. When Is slid it on to the touring bars it fit - but only because it slid off it's plastic carrier that much when I slid it on. Once I took some more measurements and realized I had to also drill a new locator hole on the right side, a quarter inch out - it all made sense. |
