Anyone have any first hand experience with the Motoport kevlar gear? I've been looking for reviews and found a few both good and bad, but I wanted to see if anyone on these forums could give me any more insight before I spend that much money on gear. Thanks in advance. | ||

man, I wish. Spendy stuff, but I would trust kevlar as a mesh material over nylon or polyester any day. Some day I hope to be able to afford it, and justify it by comparing with the cost of skin grafts and hospitalization. | ||

I have mesh jacket and stretch pants. I sent in measurements only, since I got overpants. Only thing I plan on doing is add a velcro loop and strap to shin area to tighten down armor, a little too loose, but it is an overpant. Very happy with the gear, jacket was modified to fit Leatt brace under jacket. Nice and cool, very easy to get in and out of, great reflective material. Check out advrider.com for a bunch of reviews, will be throwing up some photos of the jacket being modified for leatt over there later today. | ||

So, I got my motoport jacket and pants, the air mesh versions of both, today. I don't have pictures yet, nor have I gone for any long rides, but I do have some first impressions. First, holy crap. This stuff is stout. I got the full quad armor upgrade all around, to include sacrum and I feel like I'm wearing a tank. A comfortable tank, but a tank nonetheless. Second, the fabric is abrasive, I'll try putting it in the dryer with no heat and some sneakers to see if breaking it in a little will soften it up some. Third, the airflow is great, even with the armor. I can feel it just walking around house. Fourth, the comfort, even without breaking it in, is outstanding. The lining doesn't itch or bunch, the material doesn't seem to bind, and I have a full range of motion without anything getting bunchy. I will admit that the pants are a little long when walking around, but sitting on the bike they are perfect and I got the stuff for riding. Finally, gripes. I really only have two. First, the right pant leg seems to rotate clockwise moving the armor to the outside of my shin/knee. I expect that to go away as the pants break in and mold to me so it isn't a major gripe. That being said, I'm less than impressed with the hip armor. The rest of the suit is so heavily covered, especially with the quad armor, that I feel like the supplemental hip armor isn't nearly up to the same protective standard. It feel like it's a single layer of the blue foam that the tri or quad armor has. So far, I'm thinking I might just sew in some of the other hip armor I have from other pants. I'll post more information after riding, and pictures if anyone is interested. | ||

Kevlar will always be abrasive. If it broke in it wouldn't protect as well. | ||

Actually, there are two different types of Kevlar material made by Motoport, at least that I know of. There's the air mesh kevlar, which I've noted is abrasive because of the weave, and the stretch kevlar, which I didn't mention because the majority of my gear is air mesh. The stretch kevlar is quite smooth. | ||

I have stretch Ultra II pants and jacket. Quad armor in the pants. This is the best, most protective, comfortable gear you can buy. Yes, it's bulky, and, pretty ugly. Just don't look in the mirror at yourself and you should do fine. If you really think about how much junk gear you'll buy over the years, this stuff is cheap, since it'll last so long. 4 years on my pants, and, they look new after a wash. It's really good stuff, and, worth every penny! If anyone is near Providence, RI, and, want to take a look, send me a pm. |
