Speaking of classic Buells, I need to replace the exhaust hanger at the front edge of the muffler/rear edge of the header. It's a small oval piece that bolts to the engine on one of the long bolts that holds the rear shock mount on the other side of the motor.

What/where/how should I (or do I?) support to pull that bolt out?

I think I'll need to keep the frame supported at the tail but I don't know how I'd do that.

On another note, along with the new exhaust mount I received a RS/RSS parts manual. Looks like the 1piece fairing was replaced by the 3 piece fairing in 92 and the 1 piece is unavail. now?

Anyone know how much work it would take to put S2 body work on an RS? (Just wondering)

I'm keeping my eyes open for any RS/RSS body work, for spares or repainting. I'd love a RSS tail I could throw on sometimes.

Josh the RSS tail will not fit on an RS. The tail section is different.

Yes the 1 piece is unavailable.

Talk to Aaron about replacing that part. I suspect he knows the whole routine.

In the current Fuell there is a picture of an RSS with an air-cleaner on the left side. What's the story -- dual carb setup??

OK Court, see what your sources have to say.
Is this a Dave Guess shot too? A rare one that's really rare?

Tommy looks better when you photograph his right side :0)

Pretty funny how many people can look at something and miss that.

The cover is at Road America in like 1983 or so. I also have a shot with Erik riding but it is pretty fussy, I use it as the backgorund on my webpage www.davegess.com

The story on the kit bikes is what was already guessed, a C.A.R.B. requirement. The bikes were not legal for sale in California new so to get around that rule you could buy the bike as a "kit" bike. The bike was the same as any other RSS1200 but by saying it was a kit it was allowed to be registered in Cali. My Vin: CA654489

But truth be known this bike is basically a kit bike. there are so many hand built parts on it it almost scares me to ride it. If I crash it I worry i could never repair it. :(

That was not a "guess". Not unlike the reason there were no 1995 S-2's sold in the State of Confusion (although that story gets much more interesting).

>>>If I crash it I worry i could never repair it.

Relax and ride the motorcycle. There is a covert network standing by to insure you can. You let that thing sit in your garage I'll, personally, come kick your ass. (by the way, how big are you?)

Congratulations, that's a beautiful example.

We had to make a lot of stuff back in the bad old days and we could not do casting and forging so lots of machining was involved.

Most stuff can be made form billet and the drawings still exist so that Buell can get parts.

Even the few castings are doable 'cause the place that made them does very small runs of parts.

Buell employees and Erik are pretty committed to keeping these on the road. Don't know how long that will last, it has to be getting more and more expensive to provide some of these parts.

Any one want to go into the old parts business?

Speaking of Buell esoterica.... I'm wondering about Buell engine iterations....

A '96-'98 S1 uses a Sportster motor with screamin eagle cams, shaved flywheels, big valved and ported 883 heads, right? The '98 S1W and S3T have "Thunderstorm" heads and pistons, but what about cams and flywheels? What state of motor is in a '97 S3?

If these questions could be easily answered I'd appreciate the info. If not, a shove in the right direction would be appreciated too.

thanks in advance,
Lornce

RSS question,

I was taking off parts today to see how shes(her name is Wanda BTW) put together and I noticed that it has a really goofy air cleaner backing plate. I already have a K&N air cleaner for an S2 which fits inside the chrome cover perfectly. So heres my question, will a S2 backing plate fit or another design like screaming eagle maybe? Does anybody have a backing plate that would work?

What's the story?

What is the story with the pic Peter posted?

It isn't a flipped image unless Buell made a bike with the shifter on the wrong side (as well as some other parts). That bike does have an air cleaner on the left side.

I expect to have this settled, once and for all, today.....the telltale, to me anyway, is the presence of the 3 slots.

RS's and RSS's had 2 slots on the right and 3 on the left. Air cleaner is definately on the left.

Peter, yes you are right, I was thinking we had flipped it. I, for the life of me, can't remember why it has that air cleaner there. Tilley had a trick race bike with two carbs but I don't think this is that bike.

Court stop painting and get on the phone ;)

Quote:

Good question. It's not trick photography.
That bike had Fueling four valve heads with two carbs, (one on each side).
Were always working on trick stuff like that, but a lot of it doesn't end up
in production

And now you know......the REST of the story.

Well... I bet Erik might remember, it may have been sold or the heads may have been on loan from Fueling and got returned, or they got taken off and the bike used for other stuff and the heads are sitting on shelf in Erik's barn.

For sure it was not scraped. when you only can make 4 bikes a week you don't scrap bike.
