Why do they have REO Speedwagon "Riding the Storm Out" on an endless loop for the "on hold" music?

Exhaust piece and parts manual (all the stuff I have I don't have that) on the way.

"Riding the Storm Out", hmmmm. Maybe they're hoping the SoCal "Storm Riders" (Bartels' BRAG Club) will visit the Factory?

Don and Phil were hilarious....an oral surgeon and attorney (my neighbor). Don was one of the most focused guys you'd ever want to meet and when we did the first "club", Phil (while we were on a plane headed to Gullwings, Inc. to examine his new Mercedes-Benz 300SL, wrote what must stand to this day as the most "legally binding" articles of incorporation and by-laws that any owners group has ever had.

We correspond, from time to time, to protect our legal right to continue to use the terms "Buell Owners Club" without any legal interferance. Ya gotta love a Buell who also knows the ins and outs of intellectual property rights :)

By the way, on a bit of a sore point, that was NOT the first B.R.A.G.

B.R.A.G. is Harley-Davidson's property and has, like a Boy Scout with a failed compass, lost it's way from it's original mission. Somebody goes to extreme measures to keep me from getting ANY B.R.A.G. stuff, I saw the first issue of FUELL I'd seen while at East Troy a couple weeks ago.

We were the FIRST BUELL OWNERS CLUB

So far, to date, I have attended three "first annual" Buell owners gatherings.

Court,
No kidding BRAG has lost its way! I am not at all interested in anything they do nowadays. The last couple of issues of Fuel all they talk about is the 100th anniversary rides. BORING!!!

So you are saying that we still have the ability to bring the group back to life??

How about the name Kevin Barr. Does that ring any bells? He's the first owner of my RSS.

Been there, done that. Who ya think introduced Phil to Don?

Don was a "piece of work". Swore he didn't sleep, had about 19 hobbies and was the ultimate "Type A" personality. He, ostensibly, replaced sleep with some short period of Zen or somthing.

Mail me a copy of the letter if you get a chance.

Bought the piece you're talking about plus a parts manual for $25 incl shipping from Mr Anglim.

Seems you've got cooler stuff than I do, but you you have the setup & prep manual?

Josh,
I have the owners manual, parts manual which are both very high quality in grey binders. I also have a service manual in a yellow binder which is quite unusual in the fact that it has all these blank spaces which are supposed to have pictures and drawings but there are none! It even has the parts on the pics labeled but no pics.

Court,
Did somebody steal the pics and drawings??

Ooops....well, kinda yes and kinda no. They MEANT to do it. Trust me, at that stage there were LOTS of things that, by the day, became much more important.

Hey....Erik was dreaming, didn't seem like such a stretch to ask a frickin' owner to dream what the caliper right before his eyes looked like.

Mr. Gess, who would have provided the pictures had ne not been "otherwise engaged" can speak to this better than I.

Where to begin? I’ve got a freshly opened Guinness and the Cranberries on in the background, so I’m ready to recount the last 18 hours. It sort of begins with staying in bed this morning and missing the BRAG meeting at Fort Washington (shouldn’t be at 10:00!, but hey!). In any case, the reason for getting up late is that I received a call, at 10:30 last night, from our ex-temporary receptionist. We stayed up ‘til 12:45, just talking. Man, if I was 10 or 15 years younger, but hey, that’s another story. Plus a week of getting up at 0430 deserves to be compensated.

So I finally get it together and figure I’d maybe meet up with some dcbrag members at Battley Cycles Open House in Rockville, Md. I’d been to their Open House last year, in December and had captured one of their RS1200’s and hoped to maybe see if they might have something this year to shoot. The temperature was some 30 degrees colder than last year with snow still on the ground, so the crowd wasn’t as large.

lastDecember

There was a nice Buell collection on the floor, which included a X1W, S3, P3, XB9R and XB9S. I’d heard in the past that the owner owned an early RR1000 and not seeing it, I asked an employee if he could point me to the owner. He asked if I had an appointment, which of course I didn’t. So he pointed me at someone, Tom, the GM and said maybe he could help. I explained to Tom who I was and what I was looking for.

Tom was great and went off to find the owner. Shortly there after he came back and introduced me to Devin Battley. Now Devin looked vaguely familiar and he commented that I too looked familiar to him as well.

So again, I explained who I was and that I did the web site for dcbrag and was looking to possibly shoot some pictures of the RR1000. He mentioned that he had the bike in storage along with an RR1200, the white RS1200 that I had seen last year and a blue RS1200.

Here’s the cool part: He proceeded to tell me that in fact the RR1000 is serial #1. Then how he had met Erik Buell those many years ago and how he’d put a down payment on the bike.

Part Two: OK, second Guinness and James Taylor on in the background.

Devin went into recollecting how he helped Erik get introduced to some of the movers and shakers at Harley-Davidson. It was the around the time they had purchased themselves back from AMF and were getting the dealers together, on cruise ships, for meetings.

Now the ships weren’t like the massive floating cities that you hear about today. The vessel they were on, out in the Bermuda Triangle, was being beaten by the waves, so most of the passengers weren’t feeling that well. In fact, the crew had setout those barf bags all along the hallways.

So with most passengers riding the storm out in their staterooms, Devin, Erik, Don Tilley, Mr. Bartel and a hill climber (whose name I can’t recall) had the casino virtually to themselves. All being racers, they figured they had something within them which precluded the ill effects of the boat that was rockin’. At this time, Devin explained to Erik that he was in a great position, what with the movers and shakers altogether where he would be able to sell the idea of his motorcycles and passion.

The next night, Devin introduced Erik to the then CEO of Harley-Davidson (and decked out in a Captain's uniform). They went through how there was this great motorcycle with excellent handling, good brakes and powered by a XR1000 engine. Von was sold on the idea and the rest is part of Buell history.

Somewhere along my conversation with Devin, he brought up the name of Henry Duga, one of the first couple of employees of Buell. My interest peeked as I had met Henry this year at Summit Point Raceway and I mentioned the fact. As it turns out, this is where Devin and I had met before. He said he was there on his Polite bike (yes, polite) and after the FUSA Lightning Series race had finished, a hellish storm blew up and we all sought shelter under the Buell Courtesy tent.

It’s funny how our lives intersect in this motorcycling community. We ended our conversation with an exchange of cards and e-mail addresses. So yes, hopefully I’ll be able to contact Devin and maybe be able to get a look at his bikes. He also mentioned that the un-restored RW750 is here in the area, so that too may be a sight to capture.

Ps., enough Guinness and the Prairie Home Companion is on. Tale or History? The coin landed on heads.

Dana, Thanks. Can you send me a larger, less compressed copy of that one? And would you have any on the individual bikes too? I'm looking to beef up our History Page. Sadly, our S1 page is pretty pitiful, but I'm still workin' on Court.

And oh man, I've been meaning to ask if you can send any of your bike (like the one in your profile)?

Thanks, Steve
