The latest thing to goof up is my starter. I start the motor an fine, everythings fine, engines running, choke on, fast ideling as usual, then for no reason the starter engages,I leap over to hit the kill button, ok I kill the engine and start it again it starts and the starter stays engaged, imediatly it shut it off, do it all again, the motor starts, runs, again the starter engages again. I'm a little stumped here, I'v read through the posts, one dated in 02 was sort of similar, but not really, have any of you out there any ideas? the post spoke of taking the solenoid apart and emeryclothing the contact etc, sort of like an old Chevrolet starter fix it trick.

It may be the solenoid spring is broken(or weak). Take the starter solenoid out and check. At least you don't have to pull the whole starter. This is just one possibility.

Well I was prepared to get a solenoid kit from the HD store, but before that I went ahead and pulled the end plate off and had a look, and it appeared all good, so I greased lightly the spring and rod, and even lighter the plunger itself and put it back togather, then I pulled the throtle housing apart to have a look-see and hit it with WD40 and then pulled the tiny screws, pulled the switches out and had a look. All looked good, so back together it went, and finishing that, I had adressed everything I thought could be related to My problem.....so I started the bike and......well no more problem, you know I'm enclined to think it was the handelbar switch, just a scooush cruded up, though it didnt appear funky when I did take it apart, but for the longest time I'v had to sometimes flip the start/kill rocker switch before I could get the starter button to engage, so I'm guessing that was the culprit.
the real deal
PS thanks Bert

Hey good job GOHOT. You just never know sometimes where the next problem will appear. I personally think electrical is the worse. If it goes bad that is not to bad it is the intermittent stuff that sucks.
