Strange problem here. Sometimes, after starting the bike in neutral and shifting into 1st, the engine will cut out. I can slip it back into neutral, start it up and usually it is fine after the first time (but not always).

I was thinking it might have something to do with the kickstand failsafe, but not sure. The kickstand IS up when shifting into first.

There is also the rare occasion that this happens at a stop. I'll shift into neutral, idle at the red, then when I shift to 1st, the engine stops.

All I have done so far is to check the clutch adjustment.

Any ideas? 1999 X1...

In my experience if the switch is bad it will not affect anything as long as the clutch is pulled in. It will only kill if you let it out. This is from my 2000 M2.

Check your clutch switch, side stand switch and neutral safety switch. Sound like the clutch switch maybe dirty as well as the side stand switch.

Clean and/or replace clutch safety switch and replace side stand switch.

Thanks Joe. The engine cuts off when I keep the clutch pulled in and switch from N to 1st. I will check my repair manual on replacing both safeties.

I would look at the neutral switch then.

I get something like that as well. Except it only starts to cut out. It never goes all the way off. Engine spools up again and stays on. It's random at stop lights for me. I was thinking something wrong with the clutch.

On a side/related note. I just realized my kickstand safety switch doesn't work, either. I can ride it with the kickstand down.
