I have a 2003 XB9R that runs beautifully almost all the time EXCEPT when running at 3000 plus rpm in fourth or fifth gear (think interstate) and I hit bumps or expansion joints the bike shuts off for just one beat.

It appears to shut off both fuel and spark as I never get a backfire - and I do not notice a change in the rpm on the tach but it is a definite surge that makes certain interstate and rough back roads un-rideable. The worst is older sections of interstate where the expansion joints have slightly heaved giving a rocking motion that really sets up for this problem. Bridge expansion joints do the same. The problem becomes self sustaining with the start and stop of the motor which makes maintaining speed impossible.

My first thought was the kickstand switch but that is now bypassed. My dealer put in three hours troubleshooting and no fix yet (no charge either) but they seem to be at a loss. Anybody else seen this - any ideas where to head next?

Can you get the service tech to list what he checked out and report back here? That would sure help out so we don't suggest things he did.

Are you the original owner or, if not, do you have the history of the bike, like what parts were replaced in the past?

Do you suppose it could be pilot error -- inadvertantly chopping the throttle slightly when the bike hits these bumps?

That info would be helpful wouldn't it! It has the race ecm/exhaust (silver dual outlet)and a modified air cleaner box. Things that have been checked include:
plugs, plug wires - one replaced when I found a wear spot early on in this mission. Related coil wiring inspected for defects.

The dealer tech checked:
Fuel pressure
All the connections that could be reasonably accessed
Timing
TPS

The dealer (Kutter Harley) has been very helpful but has not been able to eliminate the problem.

The operator error thing was my thought the first three times I experienced it but Kutter can easily duplicate and I have seen it enough times that we have ruled that out. It can actually get into a bucking motion that will not resolve until I let off or slow down. On a twenty mile ride on bad road you can see this forty times easily.

Even though dlr. said he checked all connections, I would double check your battery connections,... I had a bike doing that too-turned out to be a corroded and loose + connection. So simple!!

Bank angle sensor connections should be checked.

Behind fairing above lights.

If not that then bypass the kill switch.

This may or may not be your issue. But sounds similar enough to what I had happen that it is worth a look...
