I bought a new battery 2 weekends ago as the original one finally died. It was a Sunday and I wanted to ride so I bought a replacement at Autozone. Their book showed it as a replacement.

I fully charged it and all went well, but every day the starter motor turned over slower. Checked this morning and the battery is now at 50% charge.

Could it be a crappy battery or the voltage regulator?? How would I test. I have a long ride planned for Sunday with some buddies....Joe

I would charge it first and then start it. It should produce approx. 13.5 to 14.5 volts (running)if not probably the regulator. And while off read approx. 12 to 12.5 volts and if less it maybe the battery. I seriously doubt it is the battery and suspect the voltage regulator. Also clean all your connections (positive and ground). I had the same problem and all it was was loose and dirty battery and ground connections. Also the manual has all the tests for the regulator and stator checks. They should have those here.

Thanks for the info. I will check and clean the battery connections. I am assuming that changing out the regulator is a pretty easy job. Am I correct on that one.

VR is pretty easy, stator is harder. There is another thread about that now.

Pop off your primary chain inspection cover, and take a big whiff. Thats the easiest test, its amazing how bad blown stators can stink.
