This only happens from 5th gear - when I downshift its very hard to find a gear. Usually after pushing the shifter a few times it will jump into 4th, sometimes the first gear I find is lower.

Is this only when downshifting, or up and down?

Possibly the detent, but if you're unlucky, as I was, the dogs on the mainshaft 1st gear are going bad/ broken and making it difficult/ impossible to engage 4th. Check out the schematic in the manual and you'll see what I mean.

No, this only happens when downshifting from 5th. Every shift from 1st up through 5th is fine, and from 4th back down is fine.

The only other symptom is it seems like it's harder lately to keep my neutral light on? I don't know if that could be connected.. It's still just as easy to get into neutral, but it's hard to get the indicator light to stay on. That problem is just a slight annoyance, because if the light doesn't stay on then the bike dies any time the clutch is engaged and the kickstand is down.

Took the X1 to Dillon Brothers HD. They told me that adjusting my CRG clutch lever all the way to a 6 would fix the problem - that I was barely dragging the clutch and causing the difficult downshift. Good news - I resisted the urge to be a smartass! Bad news - they were wrong.

I rode about 150 miles yesterday and only successfully downshifted from 5th maybe 5% of the time.

Now that I've got the lever adjusted to a 6, are there any OTHER ideas? =]

When I bought my used S3T the neutral light was wonky and it would grind going into most gears. It was the detent plate clip and the pins on the shift drum backing out. I bought the baker shift drum from American Sport Bike with the bolt on detent to solve the problem. More info can be found in the Knowledge Vault.

Cool! It's a lot of money to replace a $.02 clip, but it's a definite upgrade.

I got a call from Dillon Brother's HD today. Apparently the downshifting problems were caused by a small piece of the detent plate breaking off. The broken piece also chewed up the stator before it settled in the bottom of the case.

Make sure the dealer knows the shift-pawl needs to be slightly modified to work with the Baker detent plate.

It should be entirely noticeable to the mechanic why if he (or she) ratchets the shift drum through the gears before the clutch and rotor go back on. The shift-pawl arm will slightly interfere with the detent plate when shifting to a specific gear. Which gear it is escapes me right now, but that's not important because it'll be really apparent... but only if it's checked.

Dj - Al from American Sport Bike sent me a note along with the shift kit telling me about the interference issue between the shift pawl and the allen head on the detent plate.

I told the Service dept. at Dillon about it then, and I reminded them when I saw your post.

I shouldn't be surprised, but they didn't file anything down when they installed the shift kit. I'm getting the slightest bit of interference between 3rd and 4th. It's not bad enough to cause problems, especially since I know to expect it all the time.

I'm slowly learing to expect this kind of so-called "service" from a dealer.
