The Hawaiians are generally regarded to have originated the sport of surfing a long time ago. Eventually the sport migrated to the States and especially Southern California where it became very popular in the 60's. As it turns out, this is probably the only sport that has its own music.

Enter the Beach Boys, Jan and Dean, Dick Dale & the Del-Tones, the Belairs, the Ventures, etc. These first wave bands originated a new genre of Rock -- Instrumental Surf Music. The essence, spirit and vitality of those times never died. It lives on today with new Surf bands emerging all over the world. With that in mind, here are some links to events in SoCal where you can catch the current wave of Surf Music:

Mach Turtle website - list of surf music concert events

Huntington Beach International Surf Museum Surfin' Sundays series of free concerts at the Museum or the Pier

Here's what they have for May:

Baja Cantina, 311 Washington Blvd., Marina Del Rey
May 10, The Torquays
May 17th - The Duotones
May 24th - The Surftones

Huntington Beach Surf Museum
May 21, The Torquays

First up is the Torquays. With a name like that, these guys ought to be Buellers.

So, if you can, ride your Buell to these events. Parking is much simpler on a bike. Whichever way you arrive, maybe I'll see ya there,

We've got 12 to 20 ft. waves at the beach, 80 degrees, and the Boardwalkers at Baja Cantina's Wednesdays Surf Night!

Good food, great music (free too), fun atmosphere and I think it's surfboard raffle night tonight.

Jeff the BigTikiDude sent me this intel on who's playing Baja Cantina this Wednesday, 7/12.

quote:

Hey all So. Cal. surf fans.
I highly recomend if you can make it, to come out to see Slacktone at the Baja Cantina on Wed. from 7 to 10 pm.
This is a rare chance to see them do 3 sets, in a semi toned down setting. They break out all their songs from the cds, and many many covers that you wouldn't normally hear them do.
This is a kid friendly venue if you have little ones that need to come along. And it's free!!

Saturday, 7/15/2006

Now, this has gotta be a BIG DEAL! Insect Dave sent me this:

INSECT SURFERS 20 YEARS IN LOS ANGELES ANNIVERSARY
===Safari Sam's , Sat July 15th======

Insect Surfers (David Arnson-guitar, Dano Sullivan-guitar, Dan Valentie-bass, Adrien Anthony-drums) are celebrating their 20 years in Los Angeles on Saturday, July 15th, at the new Safari Sam's in Hollywood, 5214 Sunset Boulevard. $10.00 cover.

Starting at 8:00pm sharp, the lineup, in order of appearance is-

* 12:30am Spindrift (psychedelic spaghetti western sounds)

Also featured are KXLU's Reverend Dan on DJ duty, and Stormy Byrd's award winning dragster 'Revelation', revving it up in front of the club between sets!

Special luau/tiki menu and drinks!

and- free admission for all drivers bringing their hot rods!

Unfettered dancing! Groovy projections!

You might even wanna bring earplugs-we don't really as a rule play that loud, but the sound system here is really, uhh, loud!

We got 'Reverb Sun' bassist Mike Oneil flying in from NYC!!! And former drummer Jimbo comin' in from his (crunched) house in New Orleans! Plus many other past and present Insects guestin' on yer fave Insect tunes!

----and merchandise-wise---we're getting new shirts (and new designs!) and reprinting our old cds --collect 'em all! Hoot! And artist Yume will be sellin her lil' Surfin' Insect sculptures!

SEEYA THERE!!!! !~~~~~!!!!!!!!

Here's a little Insect Surfers background (OK, a lot : )):

quote:

Originally formed in Washington DC, summer 1979, Insect Surfers played gigs with acts such as Bad Brains and the Slickee Boys, and went on to open for such acts as the B-52's, Psychedelic Furs, Echo and the Bunnymen, Iggy Pop, and Joan Jett. Touring the USA extensively, they placed as high as #25 on the national college radio charts while releasing several discs and singles.
Relocating to Los Angeles in 1985, founder David Arnson met up with guitarist and sax player 'Dano' Sullivan, where they reinvented their sound as a mainly instrumental outfit, resulting in theitr most dynamic sound yet. Debuting in June 1986 at KXLU's 'Surf Day' (read : neighborhood disturbance!), Insect Surfers went on to play on bills with the likes of Jonathan Richman, Pylon, Dick Dale, The Ventures, Link Wray, and Chris Isaak (who liked them so much he asked Dave and Dano to audition for his band later!). Ace drummer John Convertino went on to play with such fine acts as Giant Sand and Calexico.
The Insect Surfers sound is a high-energy blend of influences ranging from Link Wray, Dick Dale, and Davie Allan, to Television, Qicksilver Messenger Service, and spaghetti western and middle eastern sounds. They found their niche inpop culture history by being featured in Rhino Records' cd box set 'Cowabunga! A History of Surf Music', and have won for 'Best Instrumental Band ' at the 'L.A.Weekly Music Awards' in 2003. Along the way , they have released 3 cds on their label Marlin Records, have a recent 'Best Of' on a Greek label, and have appeared on over 30 (!) compilations.

Sounds like a fun party!

Don't forget to tune into Clint Beachwood's "A Day at the Beach" internet radio show. This is 2 hours of surf music broadcasted weekly from San Diego State U.

There are several ways to tune in:
1) If you live in or around San Diego, tune into Cox Digital Cable channel 956 or Time Warner Music Choice channel 957.
2) Open Windows Media Player and paste this url, kcr.sdsu.edu/kcr.asx
3) Click this link, www.kcrlive.com/ and then click the Windows Media radio to begin streaming the station.
4) Clint also has a MySpace account. So if you are into that, search for Clint Beachwood in MySpace; there should be a link to his show there.

His site is one of the most informative re Surf Music, drawing like minded music fans from all around the world.

It seems like as the world gets smaller, CyberSpace gets bigger, don't it?

From the land that gave the world Porsches, Mercedes Benz's and Volkswagens, but to say "the Kilaueas is a surf band from Germany"? That's a gross understatement. After seeing them in person, these guys ROCK! They have picked up the instrumental surf music genre and honed it to perfection. Rick Wilkinson of Surf Report says it best, "Surf music needs no translation."

The combination of the Kilaueas' (almost rhymes with killer whales) song writing ability, energetic enthusiasm, the surf sound and on-stage moves makes for a very interesting show.

They are into their second week of a 22 day USA tour. Tonight they are at the Baja Cantina, splitting the bill with Longboard Ranch. So, if you want to see the Kilaueas before their tour takes them out of the SoCal area, tonight at Baja Cantina's Surf Night concert is a must see.

Wed. Sept 6

Longboard Ranch
The Kilaueas

Baja Cantina
311 Washington Bl., Marina Del Rey
7 p.m., (free)

Well, I guess the Baja Cantina knows they hate to see a good thing go away.
The Wednesday Surf Nights Concert thing has ended for this year, but they started a Wednesday Tropics Night featuring Reggae/Lite jazz/lounge type musicians.
Quite a change from the amplified, reverb-drenched surf sounds but enjoyable nonetheless.
This is supposed to continue thru next year when the Surf Nights Concerts start up again in spring.

Thurs, Nov 9
The Insect Surfers (All Star band) lead off for the Whys, a Japanese all-girl surf band, tonight at the Purple Orchid, 221 Richmond St, El Segundo.
It's free.

Sun, Mar 18 - The 6th Annual Acid Beach Party
at the Echo, 1822 Sunset Blvd. LA.
$10, all ages.

Featured bands:
3:15 - 3:45 SURF ROCKETS
4:00 - 4:30 OUTER WAVE
4:45 - 5:15 REVENTLOS
5:30 - 6:00 DOUBLE NAUGHT SPY CAR
6:15 - 6:45 BOARDWALKERS
7:00 - 7:45 INSECT SURFERS

Acid Beach Party presents its 6th show in a psychedelic series of consciousness elevation through loud rock music.
Bands combined with psychotronic video make for old fashioned sweat-lodge hallucinations.

What is Acid Beach Party?
Is it the long lost movie where Annette and Frankie dropped out and turned into Sunshine and Sky-boy?
Is it where ravers danced the apocalypso on the Bikini Atoll the night the A-bomb tests turned the sand to glass?
Is it a Vulcan mind-meld of freak out music and freakin' video, bands united in the lysergic resurgence?
Acid Beach Party is not about the trippy wanderings of misguided 60's drug fueled false euphoria, aimless as an endless guitar solo.
Acid Beach Party is not a trendy fashion, a designer drug, or the latest ecstatic rave.
Acid Beach Party is a highly distilled goo, uniting musician, instrument and audience in a mind body feedback loop.
Acid Beach Party is loud, dark, confusing and dedicated to bringing the outside in and the inside out.

And it's a lot of clean fun, cool psychedelic videos, lava lamps, good vibes and loud, reverberating instrumental Surf Music -- the best live surf music in So Cal!

Acid Beach Party was started by Dave Arnson of the Insect Surfers in January, 2000 and this is his 6th in the Los Angeles area.

We're all in it for the fun.
That's what puts the joy in life.
Surf music, among other things, puts joy in my life.
The joyful tunes that emanate from this 2-hour radio segment are an outgrowth of simpler times when we rode our first wave while listening to the Beach Boys, the Belairs, Dick Dale and other first-wave surf bands.
Surf music's gone full circle from Southern California to enthusiasts around the world, and back to Southern California's KCR radio, San Diego. So enjoy!

A late change in the July lineup:
Wednesday July 25

The Duo-tones + 2 (special guests!)
at Baja Cantina in Marina Del Rey,
311 Washington Blvd.
7 pm to 10 pm, free, and all ages.

The question is, who are the special guests?
I don't know, but the Duo-tones (Paul Johnson of the Belairs and Gil Orr of the Chantays) are an easy listening treat all by themselves.

Dead Men Don't Surf, a band made up of ex-Dick Dale band members, has apparently been moved from July 25th to August 29th.

Sparky,

Have you heard the CD being sold by Starbucks?

It's a best-of compilation of surf instrumentals by all the major groups titled "Big Waves"

http://www.hearmusic.com/#PRODUCT279

If you want a copy - shoot me an email, we have family working there and can get sweet deals on the family discount (NO! We don't just lift it when their backs are turned!!).

SS,

No, I haven't heard it yet, but Ferenc of Pollo Del Mar shamelessy plugs it in SurfGuitar101 thusly:

quote:

This summer, Starbucks has released a collection of surf music called "Big Waves". It has an excellent collection of vintage surf, but the last third of the CD is devoted to modern surf bands like The Mermen, Laika and the Cosmonauts and... Pollo del Mar. Wow! Check it out at a Starbuck's near you, or follow this link.

Wow, that's the same link as yours. Neat!
PM on the way.

Thanks,
Sparky

BTW, did you or anybody who was at Laguna Seca hear Drifting Sand playing outside Bubba Gumps on Saturday? Kinda mellow beach music for the most part. Almost vintage cool, not what you'd hear on the radio these days.
