Thanks. New job is going well so far. Getting settled in Tucson. Did a quick ride up to Mt. Lemmon the other day. Nice scenery. There are tons of little pull outs and signs that say, "Slow cars pull over for fast motorcycles." At least, that's what was happening.

Gonna leave a message for 1eyert to get togetgher soon.

Well... He had surgery on the 10th, double lung transplant. They tried everyday for five days to bring him around so they could get the ventilator tube out and get him breathing on his own, but every time they started to bring him around, he got very combative, so they knocked him out again. Then, on the 15th, they somehow got him to come around and cooperate. They were able to remove the ventilator tube and he could breathe on his own.

I arrived that day and he was awake but pretty loopy from the meds. The next day, he didn't remember seeing me the day before. His voice was quite hoarse after being on the vent so long, but it got better. They got him walking on the 16th, just 50ft or so around the ICU. THe next day, he did 100ft. By that Sunday, he was off oxygen, breathing on his own, walking like 200ft with the therapist, etc. Unfortunately, while all this is going on, he continues to be weird and loopy. They said that the anti-rejection meds would make him hallucinate, but that it would subside in a few days. It didn't. He tried to get up and go a few times overnight, so they had to put someone in the room with him 24/7 to make sure he didn't leave.

Now, a couple weeks later, he's still loopy and somewhat uncooperative. They were taking him down yesterday for a cat scan to see if he might have had a stroke. I think they were also going to check him out regarding his eating, too. When he first woke up, he was telling us he was starving. After being out for five days, they had a feeding tube in him. But once he could eat, he pretty much wouldn't. He'd eat a few bites and be done. He said he was full or didn't like it, etc. They're going to do some test to see what's up with his stomach, if anything.

So, right now, we're a bit up in the air because he's still in the hospital when we expected him to be released days ago. He's not sleeping much, not eating much, etc. Hopefully, they'll figure it out soon, because the lungs are working great!

I've had a friend who received a liver transplant and he was out of his mind for several months from all the medications. Hang in there.

Had an awesome superbowl sunday! Mt. Lemmon ride with CJ on our buells, cold and snow on the road the last mile, thanks for lunch CJ. Steaks on the grill at halftime.
Cigar and beer afterwords. Great game by the Seahawks, dominated every area of the game and exploited every mistake!

Art, thanks again for the great ride and hosting me for the super bowl. You have a lovely family and are a pretty good grill chef, too! Look forward to more rides this year.

Thanks!

the movie was ok, nothing to write home about.
I got the impression it is a warm and fuzzy, make everyone feel good about motorcycles movie. It did touch on pretty much every type of rider, and mainly focused on bringing young riders into the sport.

Nice link, EBR is staying busy.

Don't forget SpringFast is coming up this May, on Memorial day weekend. Because it's a holiday weekend, the lodge is getting a lot of requests.
We still have 5 rooms set aside that have not been reserved yet. If you are planning on going, get your reservation in soon.
They will probably pull the unreserved rooms by the end of the month because there is so much demand.
Tal Wi Wi Lodge, Alpine, AZ (928) 339-4319

Rooms are reserved under the SpringFast group

See you there!!!

You guys riding up there yet?

I got out for a little around town action today. Checked out several gun stores to see what I could find. Tomorrow I'm going to the Pima Air Museum with a guy from work. We're riding. He's got a new Honda something-or-other. Cruiser, I think.

Sunday I'm going to go exploring. May head towards Tombstone. Haven't ever been there. Not sure what the roads look like out there.

Hey CJ,
Of course I'm riding ; )
Rode with Chris last weekend up 14 and met Kim for lunch. I've been doing a lot off dirt biking, trying to build my stamina, and improve my skills for the BDR ride this summer.
When I lived in Tucson, we used to ride 83 down to sonoita and out to Sierra vista and back. I seem to remember Patagonia being one of the destinations also.
Pima museum is awesome, lists of good history there.
You going to make Springfast?

I really want to, but I can't. Because it's on the holiday weekend, I'm working. Apparently this hotel gets packed on all the holiday weekends and the pool is nuts. I'll have to set up access control just to keep the locals out of the pool and reserve it for guests and country club members. Gonna be tough with my small staff.

Also, the week of Springfast is my birthday week. Angela is planning to come to Tucson for the whole week.

If I remember correctly, you guys do a scouting run a few weeks in advance. I could probably get away for that. Let me know when it is and I'll come out.

Today I took a ride south, following some of Bart's suggestions. I took 83 south from the Tucson area to Sonoita. That road is a little crappy at the top. Looks like it hasn't been paved in a dog's age and is full of tar snakes. Not the nasty lumpy ones like 191 a couple years ago, but still... However, about halfway to Sonoita, it gets considerably better and you can ride really fast with sweeping curves and not much traffic. There was a Border Patrol checkpoint, but they don't bother you too much on the bike.

From Sonoita, I went east on 82 and then south on 90 into Sierra Vista, then south on 92 to the Coronado National Memorial. I got one more stamp for my book. I'll have to count those dudes up, because I think I'm almost at a hundred.

I talked to the guy in the ranger station and asked about the road going back over the mountain toward Parker Lake. He said it was gravel, pretty hard, manageable by car, but since I was on the bike, if it wasn't an offroad bike, it might be slow going. Apparently, just two miles from the ranger station on the gravel, you get to the pass with an overlook, so I could go that far and see how I liked it. If it was too rough, I'd only have to back track the two miles rather than continue on the other 15 miles or so.

I decided to try it out. Unlike my last experience, it wasn't raining at all today or at all lately, so no chance of soaked muddy ground.

The pass:

The first sections were a bit tricky, with lots of larger chunky gravel, but soon enough it smoothed out and there was really just hard packed dirt. If it had rained and soaked up a lot of water, it would have been squishy, but it was pretty good today. No photos of that bit.

It only took me a little under an hour to go the 17 miles or so on the gravel/dirt road. Lots of great scenery too, but I was pretty focused on the road and didn't bring the good camera. Or even the ok camera. Just the phone.

Once I got to Parker Lake and hit the pavement, it reminded me a lot of that section by Black Lake in NM, between Angel Fire and Mora. One plus lane of unstriped crappy asphalt, a few random farms scattered in there, and not much traffic. Some fun curves but lots of crumble on the edges. Once you get to the striped part, there was some nice curves, but eventually the road looks like it has seen too many RVs because it's wrinkled and has tons of potholes. Some are pretty sizable, too... enough to take you off the bike if you weren't careful.

I made it back to Sonoita easy enough and gassed up for the slab back to Tucson. Kind of sucks because my apartment is very far from the freeway. Not that I need to get on the freeway much, but it makes getting into and out of town faster. There must be 50 traffic lights in between. About the only thing that makes it cool is riding past the boneyard.

Here's the route:

Nice, looks like you had a decent ride.
Whereabouts is your apartment? Have you found Spanish trail on the east side yet?
Also roller coaster road out on the west side is fun ; )

My apartment is at Sabino Canyon & Snyder Rd. I have not found Spanish Trail and have never heard of roller coaster road. I did talk to a guy in a gun store the other day that said if you take speedway all the way west, it goes into the mountain there on the west side and that ride is supposed to be good. Haven't done it yet.

Yeah, it's always this time of year before the road clears enough to be good up there. Ought to be another month or so before the high parts of the high road and the enchanted circle are truly clear.

So... I got two days off this week but in the middle of the week... kinda. Thursday and Friday. Sorta sucks, but at least the weather is nice!

Today I rode to Tumacacori National Historic Park south of Tucson. It's about fifty miles down I-19. I noticed that I-19 is pretty weird because all the distance markers and signs are metric. Everything is in kilometers. Speed Limits are still in MPH, but the KM to the next town was throwing me off.

Tomorrow, I decided to make a big day of it. Still trying to get more stamps in my NPS Passport, so I'm going to try to hit three sites tomorrow that are north of here.

It's a bunch of miles, but I'm thinking that AZ-88 is going to be a nice road. Likewise, coming back down AZ-77 from Globe should be pretty nice for a bit before I fall off into the hot. Says only 326 miles round trip, but it looks like it takes a while. I'll try to leave early-ish.

Pics when I have them.

Had a nice ride on the 1125 today. Just got done replacing the LFL sensor and wanted to make sure all was good. Took 14 north then the high road to Sipapu and Mora, Angel Fire, over to Taos and back. 430 miles all total.
http://share.findmespot.com/shared/faces/viewspots .jsp?glId=00kJzgYrk2u8PnN2kIpHrBb5Ci7h5gXY3

Roads are in good shape, had a great time :-)
Passed a red XB just north of Golden. Spotted the air scoop as I went by and recognized it as a Buell. Gave the guy a thumbs up as I gassed it into the next corner.
Anybody from here?

Looking forward to SpringFast!

Also, Kelly and I are doing a pre-ride this weekend.
Meeting in alpine at noon, riding down 191, and camping west of Clifton at the coal creek campground, then riding back up and home on Sunday.
Anyone is welcome to go if they wish, just meet us in Alpine at the cafe at noon, AZ time.
