A note from Alan. He got 96.951 mpg and beat Craig Vetter.

Hi Guys,

I beat Craig Vetter again last Sunday in the fuel economy contest. The fuel economy course ran from Las Vegas to Barstow. Average speeds were around 75 MPH. A few times speeds topped 80 MPH.

Five bikes competed. Depending on how the jugging is done I got the second best fuel economy. The streamlined Hayes diesel beat me again, 133 MPG. But I did get slightly better mileage than the unstreamlined Hayes diesel. Craig Vetter and I think that the Fred Hayes has about $100,000 invested in his bike compared to $3,000 in my Ninja 250. So I don't feel so bad. Also Fred has corporate backing.

Saturday, the day before the competition the motorcycles were on display at the AMA convention on the 5th floor at the Red Rock Casino. It was tricky to get my 10-foot long streamliner in a 9-foot freight elevator. After we wedged my motorcycle in the elevator no one could reach the button to go to the 5th floor. After a little more work someone was able to push the button to go up.

Unlike the others that trailered or trucked their streamliner motorcycles I rode my motorcycle to Las Vegas and back, about 1100-miles round trip. On the ride back home I hit rain for for over an hour then crossed Tehachapi Pass. Crossing the mountain pass the rain stopped but it started to snow. The temperature dropped to 37 degrees in Tehachapi Pass, my gloves and boots were soaked from the rain. So my hands and toes froze. I pulled into Bakersfield just after sunset to find a motel.

I plan to bring my streamlined Ninja 250 the December's ASBN meeting.

Overall I had a great time.
Alan Smith
