What cams are in the XB9R? and what are the specs, lift duration etc? are there any recommendations for aftermarket cams to to get more hp & tq. from the XB9?
I already have the race ECM, K&N, and Jardine

Thanks
Jeff

From Nightrider - about the biggest/most complete listing of HD cams ever seen (though they don't have specs on stocker cams) - I know you're trying to find info on stock cams (sorry about that - I don't have that data)

http://www.nightrider.com/biketech/download/HDMast erCamSpecs.pdf

Much info on cams in general at their website:

Jeff,

to my best knowledge all XB cams up to 2007 are the same (don´t know about 2008 up).

Cam specs are identical to the Sportster Performance 04 cam:

Intake 25/249/44 TDC .197" lift .550"
Exhaust 59/249/10 TDC .122" lift .550"

I degreed some XB cams and the numbers are the same (plus / minus 1 degree).

The XB cam is an excellent cam. I keep it even with 1170/1470 street engines. Before changing the cam try other mods (e.g. head work).

Best regards
Alex

Alex,

This is exactly what I wanted to know, where I can find gains and if it's worthwhile, I am basically looking for easy bolt on stuff, not really after head work at this time. Do you know are there any custom ECM maps that are better than the race ECM?

Thanks
Jeff

Heads gotta come off to do the cams anyways, do they not?

Alex - if you're willing, please PM with some info about your 1170 street engine. I really want to do one of these and am looking for what all you did and what the result was.

Unless they are different from all other HD & Buell Twins they do not, remove rocker boxes, rockers, push rods, and cam cover.

Jeff,

probably any professional made map is better than the race ECM (professional is the important word). Unfortunately I can`t help You with a "better" standard custom map as I remap every bike individually to compensate for differences within every engine and setup.

XL1200r,
what details are You interested in?

Regards
Alex

Alex,
please post some Dyno numbers you are seeing with the monsters you build and what you did to them or is it some kind of secret. NO ONE who has the Promodded Buells want to talk about numbers. Hill billy post 145hp with that TURBO 1430 but no TOOOOARK numbers. What does our money get us with you guys?

It took me quite a while but in the end I prepared some dyno sheets for You (unfortunately no 1170 engine at the moment, sorry XL1200r):

Before You take a look at the dyno plots I want You to read the following lines:

whenever it comes to dyno numbers most people think that numbers are comparable from one dyno to another. In fact they are not.
The following plot represents a stock Ulysses measured on my dyno. The owner who had 2 other XB12 before claims the Ulysses to be more on the strong side of power compared to his 2 other bikes than on the weak side.

Stock Ulysses

Other tests on my dyno with different XB12 prove that. The average SAE rear wheel power of a stock XB12 is around 78hp on my dyno.
We sent the owner with his Ulysses to another dyno user (an official HD dealer) and the result was 94hp at the rear wheel. So the difference was around 14hp rear wheel for the same bike on two different dynos. That should be enough to understand that dyno numbers are not directly comparable when taken from different dynos.

In the following test plots You will see the dyno numbers from the stock Ulysses as reference. This will give You the chance to see relative horsepower and torque gains by different modifications based on the same dyno. (If we put the bikes on the HD dealer´s dyno numbers would be about 14hp higher).

Test1:
Stock Ulysses compared to an XB12 with head work

black:Ulysses, red:XB12 with head work

The black graphs are torque and power for the stock Uly, the red graphs are for a modified XB12.
Modifications of the XB12:
M-TeK Stage 1 head work with stock valves,
stock CR,
stock cams,
stock exhaust,
K&N air filter element,
2007 air box cover.

Test 2:
Stock Ulysses compared to 90 cui street engine

black:Ulysses, red 90 cui street engine

The black graphs are torque and power for the stock Uly, the red graphs are for a 90 cui M-TeK street engine.
Modifications of the 90 cui street engine:
90 cui big bore kit,
M-TeK Stage 2 head work with oversize intake and stock exhaust valves,
stock CR,
stock cams,
Micron exhaust,
K&N air filter element,
2007 air box cover,
ECU remapped.

Test 3:
Stock Ulysses compared to 90 cui race style engine

black:Ulysses, red 90 cui race style engine

The black graphs are torque and power for the stock Uly, the red graphs are for a 90 cui M-TeK race style engine.
Modifications of the 90 cui race style engine:
90 cui big bore kit,
M-TeK Stage R head work with oversize intake and oversize exhaust valves,
11:1 CR,
Red Shift cams,
Micron exhaust,
K&N air filter element,
2007 air box cover,
throttle body bored,
ECU remapped.

Finally a comparison of all graphs in one plot:

black:Ulysses, green:XB12 with hed work, blue:90cui street engine, red 90 cui race style engine

The black graphs are torque and power for the stock Uly, the green graphs are the XB 12 with M-TeK head work, blue is the 90 cui M-TeK street engine and the red graphs are for the 90 cui M-TeK race style engine.
All engines use stock injectors and stock fuel pump pressure (just to answer Hogs´question in advance).
Please disregard the hp and torque peaks at the beginning of every test. They are a result of the test procedure.

Regards

Alex

I'm an information junkie, so I eat stuff like this with solid data points up (with a spoon!)

If that's wrong, I don't wanna be right.
