Ok I got my 03 XB9 about a month ago and have been reading but what all do I need to work on? 1. I know the obvious belt issue but as mine only has 1600 miles so I'm going to wait till winter for that. 2. Kickstand recall...what happens to it and what should I look for and is this like other recalls that the dealer fixes for free? 3. Speedo Quits working...I guess I 'll wait till it happens since I can ride without that. I thought there was one more thing but I cant think of it right now. Please let me know what else I need to add to this list to check or replace. Thanks

Replace your belt and sprockets with the '04 and up system. Al at American Sport Bike has a nice kit already put together for it. You should be able to go to a dealer with your VIN and find out if all the recalls have been done. There are two, the kickstand and the wheel bearings. Look at your bearings and see if there is an orange seal on the face. If its orange, the recall has been done. If its black, then it needs to be done. |

IIRC, the kickstand was for the XB9R. Just ride. Grin. Repeat! I bought my XB9S new in '03. 44,000 miles and the only thing to go wrong was the stator @ 20,000 miles, fixed under warranty. I still keep putting off changing over to the newer belt and pulleys. |

Forgot about the bearings, mine were the orange seal when I bought the bike. |

The black wheel bearings were a recall? Mine failed miserably a few weeks ago and I was forced to install the oranges. Afterwards a fellow badwebber informed me of the TSB If this was a recall I was not notified. Can anyone confirm? Thanks. |

don't change the belt if you don't have to....you don't need to upgrade to the newer sprockets and belt....The factory belt is a weak link on the bike but they usually break from not using the repair manual when taking the rear rim and tire off....I didn't have a manual when i pulled mine off and my belt broke around 5k...ask around there are guys that put a hell of a lot more then 5k on the stock o3 belt |

Yea I hate to spend $400 if I don't have to but I'm afraid to take any long trips after all I've read. I don't want to get stranded out of state somewhere. |

Don't worry about the belt if its the one that came from the factory on the bike. The ones people are having problems with are the "upgrade" replacement. I just rode my '03 over 1k miles to Wisconsin, all over the state, and back to Indy last weekend. |

Change the belt to the 04 pulleys and the 06 belt once yours breaks. I have broken two now and am close to losing a third. Al at American Sport Bike has everything but the rear pulley. in other words no kits right now. Some have had good luck, some have had bad. |

Can anyone confirm? It was not a recall, but, dealerships replace them free. |

If this was a recall I was not notified. Can anyone confirm? IIRC it was called a "Product Upgrade". Some bearings with 7500-8000 miles were having catastrophic failure, i.e. seizing at speed. I think they mailed me a letter back in 2003. |

8000 miles on my 03 XB9S with no belt issues and i have had the guards off since the first rear tire change way back. |

i have had the guards off since the first rear tire change way back. You are greatly increasing the chance of failure doing this. These blets do not like debris |
