OK, so I broke the footpeg on my Firebolt yesterday--just moving the bike out of the garage, caught the feeler on the peg on the tire of another bike and it just snapped (I believe the torque from catching the end of the feeler is what did it). Anyway, now I have to decide what to replace it with.

The three options I've considered are:

1) Replace the peg with another stock peg.

2) Replace both pegs with stock Lightning pegs to gain a bit of legroom.

3) Replace both pegs with aftermarket billet pegs from American Sport Bike.

I'm leaning towards #2, but I also like the idea of billet pegs. I don't think I'd have had any problems with the stock peg if it hand't been for the feeler (shoulda removed them...), but on the other hand, it did seem to snap pretty easily.

Do I really need the extra strength of billet pegs? I just ride--no stunts--so I'm not too worried about landing wheelies, etc. My concern about billet pegs is, if one was stressed (say, in a tipover), would it transfer that stress directly to the frame mount and break that, rather than the peg itself breaking?

#2 option would also be the cheapest way to get fixed as the standard "S" pegs are around $11-$12 each from your favorite BWB sponsor

I just ordered the billet 1" drop mounts and LSL race pegs from American Sport Bike. Yep, they are freakin expensive, but I expect not to have to replace them.

Hope they get here soon..

#3, done it myself, heck I have the first prototype set!! I WILL NOT STAND UP ON ANY FACTORY PEG from an R or an S, NO WAY!! I snapped 2 of them, one on the bumper of my VW and did not leave a scratch, the other I snapped with my HAND, with the peg mounted in a vice!!

The billets are the way to go, period, in my opinion from a SAFETY stand point. And they just look great too!!!

Just do it, you will NOT regret it!!

I use billet pegs I bought from a guy on E-bay who makes parts for Buells. They cost less, but are really good quality.

Cycleaddict, that's a good question. There's a lot of talk on this board (and this thread) about how easily broken the stock pegs are--I was somewhat surprised myself--but on the other hand, I have to expect the engineers at Buell knew what they were doing when they spec'd the stock pegs, so is there really any danger they'll break while I'm just riding on them?

Broken while standing on the peg? Jesus Christ BMC design stuff that wont get us hurt.

I guess BMC cares as much about the pegs as they do the 03 belt.

Nice to feel loved.

i am careful to park my Lightning close to the TIG welder, so when i snap the odd peg, it is a simple matter to "glue it up"

THEY ARE SOME TYPE OF CHEAP CAST MATERIAL. I'D GUESS THE SHAVINGS ON THE FLOOR MELTED DOWN. I TRIED TO MIG SOME ALUMINUM BRACKETS ENDS TO THE STOCKER BRACKET FOR SOME REAR PEGS I HAD. AFTER MIGING THEM AND SEEING THAT SPECIAL "BLUEISH" FLAME COME FROM THEM I CHOSE NOT TO USE IT. DIDN'T FEEL SAFE ABOUT THEM W/ THE SIGNIFICANT OTHER ON THEM. I ENDED UP USING THE BILLET ALUM. PEGS I HAD TO MAKE NEW BRACKETS. I TIG WELDED THESE AND THEY ARE VERY STRONG NOW.

I broke both left side pegs when my bike fell over at the gas station. It appears the porosity in these pegs is terrible. I have seen better metal in a matchbox car. I could also hear them creak when I would stand on them and ride. The stock pegs are garbage.

I milled the "dog ears" off of my factory rear sets and turned myself some pegs out
of some 1" 6061 T-6 I had in my shop. Not only will they not break in a tip-over, in
conjunction with the spools and front axle sliders I made, they also saved my bodywork,
and the left turn signal from damage. Bar-ends are next on my hit list. I'm also making
a 1 1/2" drop plate to lower the pegs further on touring rides. 'cause I can ;)

I'm quite happy with my solid pegs for fit and feel. They do transmit more vibration,
but they also transmit more information about what the bike is doing.

If someone still has any of their broken pegs and wants to know more about what caused them to break, let me know. I do industrial x-ray for a living and could quickly radiograph a broken peg to check for and verify the porosity claims and suspicions. I'm curious about it myself. I've broken a peg or two, but it was from a creeping parking lot training session with my better half.

If you want to get them "x-rayed" for the meager amount of shipping, just let me know!

I've still got TWO broken pegs, pm me an address to have them x-ray'd...

One thing to note, look at the design, the upside down U. These pegs were only meant to take a load from the top, NOT from the side or bottom. I have not seen a single person have it break while standing on it in any way. I know, it seems scary when they break on the bumper of the VW (okay, why did that happen to two of us?), but realistically, they are meant to support a person but also sacrifice themselves in any type of lateral load (tipover, crash, etc)

That being said, I ordered the LSL pegs from Al with the 1" drop billet mount...

Actually, this is exactly what I did, for the short term--I deal with industrial epoxies for a living, and I just cut a "core" to fit in the hollow underside of the peg and built it into place with one of my materials (kinda like an industrial version of JB Weld that works). No problems so far, and I don't expect any--looks a bit "Frankenstein," though!

Shouldn't be too long, though--I gave DaveS some business, gonna put on some stock "S" pegs (hmmm...the "local" dealer I called first insisted that Firebolts and Lightnings use the same rider pegs...). As for the "Stock pegs are garbage" line, well up 'til now I haven't had any problems whatsoever, and I'm actually glad that when a it did happen (stressed in a way that would never happen while riding), it was the peg that broke and not the frame bosses.
