would it hurt to put a more open flowing muffler on a XB9 without any other mods, for more fuel, and would the engine light come on if the bike was running to lean

Depends upon what exhaust you put on there. I don't know about the engine light coming on if it is running lean but it will react if it gets too hot (starts running on one cylinder to produce less heat).

However I am running a K&N Air Filter, 12 Air Filter Cover, and Drummer with no problems on a 2003 XB9R. The air is quite cold this time of year but the bike does not seem to be running any hotter than normal. I have heard of several users on this site running this setup with no problems for quite some time.

However I don't plan to keep it this way...I bought a Race ECM and will be installing that soon when I do the next oil change. This will allow the bike to adjust the air/fuel mixture over a wider range to better ensure it does not run lean.

Like I say it depends...if you run something like a Jardine, D&D, or Force setup along with a higher flowing filter like the K&N, I would highly recommend getting the Race ECM or a Power Commander/TFI type device allowing you to adjust the fuel rates to keep the bike from running excessively lean.

Search throughout the X Board and KV files. Many of us here have opened up the stock muffler and run the stock ECM with no problems at all. Some guys have even ran straight pipes with no problems.

I ran the race kit pipe for a while without the race ecm. My bike ran really hot, with the fan whirring away at cruising speeds. Once I put the ecm on, it ran noticeably cooler. I'd recommend it with the pipe.
