This should not be happening. You should check to make sure your Throttle Position Sensor(TPS) was reset after the ECM was installed. This is a process where the ECM is told when your throttle is completely off. Without this the computer won't give the bike the right amount of fuel causing poor running.

Check with the dealer to make sure the TPS was reset. I have to do the same soon...plan to put in the ECM myself and then have the dealer reset the TPS if it runs decently enough to ride there.

Weeds, Mike used to be from Skagit here, sorry to hear about your bike. Call them up and ask them to make it right. When you do, tell them I really appreciate all the e-mail they have sent me, LOL.

Also, before you take it in, check the KV for an article called "How to reset a TPS in less than two minutes" or something like that...

Take that to them.

After changing the ECM they should have reset the TPS, but that can be a chore for them due to lack of experience. I changed it myself when I got my bike, haven't had any problems, I never could understand why they had troubles whenever they worked on any xb's. As for the ride, I moved back to south, welcome to come blast the Dragon with me whenever you like.

Fullpower did you ever figure out why ?I assume the bike would be too lean with exhaust and a stock ecm

Race ecm would not work on my bike, XB12, sent it o/s to another BWB'er who also has had no joy. Wonder if BMC would care to have a look at it too, since it's all but destined for the round filing cabinet. Makes me wonder what sort of ESD handling the dealers use, or is it a real fault, but like most things H-D, they don't want the customer to know too much. Sorry for the sarcasm people, love the bike though.

yeah still really like my XB, but sure would be nice to get the EFI sorted. I have noticed that the fuel injected Ducati, Harley, and for that matter every passenger car built since 1986 seems to run just fine at part throttle cruise.
for a couple hundred bucks it would sure be nice to purchase a plug-in ecm that will maintain a roughly stoichiometric A/F ratio under normal operating conditions.

I thought the same thing, why is powercommander or others not interested in producing a decent product?

Both the powercommander and techlusion use the signals coming from the bike's engine control module(ecm) and modify it to enrich(techlusin) or enrich and lean(powercommander) to make the bike run better. If the ECM is receiving faulty info from sensors like the tps, no amount of enrichening or leaning will correct how the engine runs. So basically, you have to have the proper info going into the ecm(stock or race) in order for the proper signals to go to the injectors. IMHO injection is wave of the future for bikes just like it is for cars. Riders that want best power, runnability, and/or mileage will just have to adjust to it or pay a GOOD mechanic/dealer to help them get it, it will not just be a matter of swapping jets in the future. As for plug-in ECM's that give the engine the correct fuel for all conditions, tell people like Daytona Twintec that you want stuff to fit Buells. They use an oxygen sensor(already on FI DDFI buells) to help program and adjust the fuel delivery to make changes for upgrades and riding conditions. They may take some work to set up, but they are way to go IMHO. But even with that system you still have to have good info going to the ECM or like computer geeks say GIGO(garbage in/Garbage out). Weeds, call Skagit and let them know that your bike runs like s*** and try to get in on first come Saturday, I would like to think Travis will make sure they make it right. I know I would have. Hope that helps many people, my fingers are tired now, LOL.

I've had trouble with Power Commanders on just about every bike. Run on the dyno stock and get one AFR across the board, plug in the PC with a complete zero map and..surprise..surpise! Now the AFR changes!?

Seems you can make a bike run good in one area but it never realy works well in others.....(i.e. continue to add or subtract fuel in a certain rev range and see no torque or AFR changes....remove the changes made on the oposite end of the spectrum and wow! Now changes can be made to the area in question....Silly box)

Had this confirmed by a bunch of folks at the Dealer News Expo this past weekend. We stayed up 'til dawn griping about tuning issues. Went through alot of beer too! Was tough to get to the show on Sunday.....much too sleepy.

Craig,

How consistent has the TFI been? If it is tuned on the dyno, can the ECM then adjust the map based on feedback, can the adjustments drift? Does the TFI prevent further map adjustments once it is in place?

It doesn't seem to Spatten... What it does is target a specific number of ms ground above what the ECM wants, as opposed to trying to take complete control and specifying the total pulse width in ms.

You're asking some great questions Scott (Spatten1), I have also asked similar questions on various TFI threads but no matter how you phrase it, or from which direction you come, there don't seem to be any answers yet. The man to answer it might be George from Dobeck, and with all respect and not trying to be too critical, some of the explanations of "how it works" have understandably been a bit cryptic.

Yeah, Just talk to George..
He's given me some little tests to perform on mine, but I'm not having the same troubles as some of you are.

there are so many possible problems, it's like trying to fix a tick over the phone! the first thing I'd check would be if the tps is zero'd, see the ddfi system uses an open/closed loop system in which from idle to probably about 3,000 rpm the ddfi runs off a closed loop, meaning the ecm takes every sensor into account especially the O2, and adjusts the fuel delivery to 14.7:1, then from about 3,000rpm to about 5,000-6,000rpm the system relies on a open loop, which mean it basically runs off a pre set program which is determind by your set afv, if your tps isn't zero'd it will directly affect your afv, (I belive if you tps is zero'd with the throttle still open it will set a higher afv, therefore on open loop you'll be running quite rich,) then from 5,000-6,000rpm and above it runs off the closed loop system again. after checking the tps if it still backfired, I'd check for air leaks, intake and exhaust, having an exhaust leak will cause almost any bike to backfire, if all thats good, check the timing, when I was at a xb initial tech upgrade we were told by the teacher that on the assembly line they have around 3.5 min to install and set all the timing components, so we started checking all the timing on pdi's and he was right about half the bikes were off, your exhaust might be the cause of the backfiring as well, I haven't installed any Jardine cans so I'm not sure, last year I made a pipe out of a straighter horn pipe for a big twin, it popped, fart, and spit all the time but I lived with it, I just couldn't give up the fuel bike sound goin through tunnels!! and guys don't worry soon the harley race tunner will be compatible for xb's (I think/hope), it's better than any power commander, as much as I'm totally for aftermarket, harley makes some really good products.

to be honest the technical support off dobeck is pretty poor......any questions directed at them about set up problems or issues with the tfi they simply give out the same line.... "refer to the instalation instructions blah blah"........ once gave me a mail addy for a guy on here who apparently tests the units for them, sent him some questions but never got a reply....sorted out the problem eventually but not impressed, waiting for a new unit to show up and going to try that to see if its any better
