Riding home last night and all of a sudden the bike is running ruff. In first gear the bike ran fine but as soon as I shifted to second the bike began to stumble. It was about 30F last night. Went out to the garage just now to check it out. First I checked the battery. It was at 12.4 volts. Than I tried to start it. It started up but would not idle and would stall. Pulled the fuse box cover to check fuses and diodes. It seamed the diodes where out of there seats a little so I pushed them back in and checked all the fuses. Tried to start the bike and no fuel pump. Pulled the diodes and switched them with new ones. Fuel pump comes back on and bike starts. It is seemed to be running better until I tried to take it for a ride. As soon as I let the clutch out it would almost stall then it would run up to 3000 rpms and back down to 1500. Could it be a TPS adjustment? What would make it go out of sync? Both the front and the rear pipes are hot.

Can somebody tell me what the diodes are for and what I should check next?

The bike is a 2003 XB9S with 9500 miles and Buell race kit.
Thanks for any help in advance.

12.4 volts sounds low, based on that information I would do a stator test and battery test, both should be pretty easy. I might also be looking for possible fouled plugs.

Also check the wire bundle that goes to your ECM, it is very easy to get it wedged up on top of one of the battery terminals, where it will cut through and randomly ground one wire (causing who knows what). It will come and go, based on where the seat and your weight is positioned.

And check the horn wire under the front flyscreen, that can short out as well, though I think it blows fuses.

The horn fuse was ok when I checked it. The wire bundle to the ecm was been protected from the neg. terminal since I first got it. Will it run like this if the battery is low?

my bike was running rough, I changed the battery and it started better and ran better. There is no alternator on the bike, so what you have is what you get. I would try a new battery, if that isn't it, at least you will have an extra battery.

I was having the same problem with my xb12r last year would start hard and after I would start it, it would die just being in neutral and would also have like a power surge with the motor when I was riding. I hate to say it but I took it to the dealer not really much of a chose and they reset all the computer stuff, and I have not had a problem sence then and that was about 4,000 miles ago. Hope that might help it sucks taking bikes to the dealer because the rip you off and some times they just plain suck.

Not all of us rip you off or suck.

I would check the battery terminals and make sure they are clean and tight.
Then check your charging system.
Sounds like it could be a low voltage issue.

12.4 volts for a battery with the bike not running isnt bad. Get down into the 11.5 range & then you will have troubles. Fire the bike up & you should see your volts jump up into the 13.5-14 volt range.

There is no alternator on the bike, so what you have is what you get.
Partially correct, true there is no alternator but there is a stator & it basically does the same exact job. You just cant see it because its under your primary cover.

Sounds like it could also be either the clutch switch or the sidestand switch. Symptoms sound a lot like mine when the sidestand switch went.

if it was the kick stand switch, wouldn't the bike just turn off when he tried to go?

I have it on my 03 XB9R and my friend has it on his XB9S, but my 2 other friends that have the 12R don't have it.

Buells Rule
Is there a way to test the sidestand switch? Did yours continue to run or did it just stall? Just went out and added some dry gas to the tank. It had been sitting for a while with a 1/4 tank of gas and I filled up yesterday. Maybe I have bad gas in it, maybe there was some condensation in the tank from sitting. I started it up again tonight and got it to idle after it warmed up but I had to hold the throttle open during warm up. The rpm would jump up to 3000 rpm and then back down to 1000 on its own. Took it for a spin down the block and back but it was still running ruff but better than earlier today. After a few minutes down the block and back it would idle and not stall. I am going to drain the gas tank next and add new gas to see what happens with that. If not I will bring it to the dealer some time this week. My problem like allot of you guys is my dealers have no idea what to do with a Buell.

Thanks
Mike

Now that sounds highly possible.Go run a tank through and check in if you can.

Mine would still run, the switch was cutting in & out while riding. It would be fine 1 minute & then the bike would surge, cut out for a second, stumble, etc. Stop & rev the motor up & it would be fine. The vibrations from riding were causing whatever shorted out to do its thing.

Sad but true, I think you should take it to a dealer. With a sudden fault while riding, you may have had a sensor or other component go out. A trip to the Digital Tech should help sort out troubles, just explain it as well as you have here and a good service writer and tech should be able to help you get to ripping again.

Mikethebike72, or any body else
Went to talk to the stealer today. He said to bring the bike in and they will check to see what the problem is. He said since it its not under a warranty that I would have to authorize and amount of hours to get this done. Can anybody give me and idea how much time it should take on the Digital Tech. Knowing the dealer If I say 2 hours to find the problem that is what he will charge. I don't mine paying but I do not want to get ripped off. I also do not want to pay this dealer to learn how to fix Buells. This dealer is no longer a buell dealer so they said they where not sure if the digital Tech would have the correct downloads for the Buell.

Some shops have standard Diagnose and Advise charge. Where I used to work it was 1.5 hours. A decent tech should be able to hook up to DT and find problem part in less than hour easily, unless it it intermentant, but yours doesn't sound like it is.

Went to the dealer to drop the bike of and before I gave it to them I went in and got the new plug wires and installed them in th parking lot. The bike did run a little better but it was still not good. Talked to the tech that will be working on it this week and he thinks it is the engine temp. sensor. He said that to change this out he would have to rotate the engine in the frame. Is this true? I looked at the 2003 XB9S service manual and it did not say you had to do that. Am I missing something? Do you need to do that on the R version? That is what he owns.
