I saw the post recently on modifying the stock can by cutting off the rear end, plugging the inside pipes so it is nearly a strait pipe from the header to the exhaust tip/exit.

Has anyone done something similar with the Buell Race muffler? With the double outlet it might make a sweet modification. It seems that the Race muffler is not very popular with knowledgeable folks (BWBs) anyway, so I wonder if anyone has cut the Race muffler open to see how it could be modified and done so?

Does anyone have a drawing of what the inside of the Buell Race muffler consists of...inside pipes, baffles, etc?

Thanks Tim. Since I will wind up with an extra stock can, I may modify it too. I have ordered a Jardine, but I kind of wish I had gone ahead and got the D&D. Since I also have the Buell Race can that I decided not to install, I was wondering if it might not be modified internally and wind up close to the D&D? If someone has a drawing of the D&D guts, that might be helpful too when comparing to guts of the Buell Race can.

Signguy...that looks like a modified stock can...I am thinking of the Buell Race Muffler, it already has the two outlets.

This is the muffler I am talking about modifying:

Sounds like a neat idea. I was wonder the same thing(if a modified race can would be even better than a modified stock can).

Looks like you would be the first one to open it up. Good luck if you do decide to do it.
Don't forget to show some pics.

Here are some pics from the modifications I made to the Jardine and reclaimed the midrange... Made a huge difference...

The parts that make up the Jardine...

The inside of the sleave...

The new perforated tube and packing... After 2 weeks of running.

Twas a little loud, so I've since inserted the original perforated tube straight back in with the packing left as it is in the modified pic, now it has the 2.25" perforated tube, an air gap, then perforated oval tube, packing then sleave.

It's now quieter, but I haven't had a chance to ride it properly or tune the TFi to suit...

After two weeks in it's first modified form I pulled it down and checked it out... All the rivets are still tight and it performs great. Kind of a cross between a drummer and the Jardine...

I'll see how it performs this week with the perforated tube back in and report back...

Hanses25: Let us see how it looks for sure. I did the same mod that Charleiboy did and I love it, but I have thought of doing the dual pipe mod as well. I am curious as to the diameter of the pipes you use and if you cut the holes with a holesaw.

I think its great that you guys love your bikes as much as you do that we as Buell riders and owners are always looking for a better mousetrap...I want to tell you that when you open the stock can and take the exit pipe out or cut it off and put the cap with two ends on it all you are making is the race can...thats the same thing that the Buell engineers came up with
and they call it the Race Pipe....

Do you have a drawing of what the layout is in the race can?

I am thinking of opening it up, but I am not sure what I will find in it, or if I cut it wrong what I will cut into. If we make a race can out of the stock, what more is there to gain by cutting the race can?

I checked your website, and it appears you may have some experience that will point me in the right direction as what to do with the race can. I would sure appreciate your perspective.

I am looking for info at this point, especially what's inside the race can.

Thanks, Cyko Bob

DaveS...I see you are on the board too. Have you heard of anybody cutting into the race muffler or what they did?

When I finally get the Jardine I will have the stock can and the race can to play with.

All the Buell mufflers are the same inside...there's no difference but the tube diameter for the 12 or 9...I don't know anything to do with it because it doesn't perform as good as what I can do by taking it all out and starting over....most people think that I just cut the end off and drill a few holes and there you go but, I've been doing this since 97 and all the Buell factory mufflers have all been the same since day one cause I've seen them all, every big manufacturer they are all the same just made to fit something else, what ever you want it for is what they make it fit...

Thanks Kds1 for the info...

Those who have modified the stock can have simply plugged two of the tubes...left the one tube that runs pretty much in front of the header open...kind of becomes a straight pipe, but has an expansion chamber in it before it exits.

Based on what you said, I should find the same layout in the race muffler. Being as it will be just sitting around I am prone to play with it, and although my muffler won't be a pro like yours, this sounds like about all I can do with it...short of removing the guts and starting over...like a pro (YOU).

Would you agree with me pretty much? Again, looking for advice from you guys that know...

Thanks again for the feedback...Cyko Bob

Kds1...Kevin...are you the guy that makes the Drummer?

If indeed you are, can you make a Drummer out of the Race Muffler too...with the two tips? The race muffler would not be as bulky looking as the stock can and I do like the two tips...dual exhaust look.

Thanks for the feedback...Cyko Bob

I can make it out of the race can but it won't perform like the Drummer with two tips because it was developed to work the way I built it...I used the race can to make the one for Tilley's Thunderbike Buell but their engine is a 1350...

Hey Vegasbueller

I've finished the modification, I just need to do some grinding and apply some paint and then I'll post some pics. I did use a hole saw, and the pipe diameter is well you'll just have to wait and see.

Well, it seems not matter what, the race can is a piece of $het.

In your opinion I would be better off having my stock muffler converted to a Drummer. I will have the stock can off at some point...waiting on a Jardine right now. I don't mind having several cans because I will have several Buells when I get back Stateside. If I send you my stock can when it comes off...you can convert it, correct?

I might mention the Harley boys flattened the front of the can when they strapped the Buell to a pallet. Is that a problem? Do you sell Drummers straight out...no exchange?

Do I need to go through Daves to get one, or deal directly. Not sure how this works.

Hanses25: Thanks man! I can hardly wait! I am also interested to hear how it sounds. I ride with another guy that has the race pipe on his 12. Mine drowns his out at speed, and sounds much sweeter at idle. I can only imagine how the duals will sound.

Thanks again,
Nick

the race pipe dosent have quite enough bark imo ,was thinking of opening up its two outlets to the full size of the outer pipe, a 2" holesaw fits well. the outer pipes are thinner guage steel but should hold up. the race ecm should be able to compensate for this modifacation. any one try this yet?

I would say to cut them out for more noise but I'm sure they added the inserts to be smaller for some reason??????? Could be that the outlets would be too large and the engine might not respond as well????

kds1.....you have the experience with these mufflers, from every thing ive read i wouldve like to have tried the drummer but dealer threw some warranty issues at me[which daves would not have]anyway in tuning these mechanically baffled exhuast are you not just adjusting the amount of back pressure as opposed to a sonic/scavagining tuned exhuast ie: reverse cone.buell labels my pipe "race kit" but i know its not the pipe that will be going around daytona, more appropiate name would be "street race pipe" stage one.anyway ime going to try it [2" outlets] on my race pipe, will post butt dyno results. anyway kds1 [if you see this] whats the worst that could happen relieving more back pressure,or what do you think it will do.you just might end up with a race pipe to labotimize. thanks......"meet me at the rev limiter , we'll have coffee"

What type of paint do you use to paint the drummer? I need to touch mine up a bit at the rear.

Sokota, My bike doesn't have a rev limiter!!!!!!
You can relieve the pressure by removing the inserts in the race can, but you can send me your pipe and I'll make it all better...

Vegasbueller:
Well I haven't applied the paint yet, I was finishing up finals and in two weeks should receive my diploma from DeVry.

Anyway I did put the pipe back on the bike and rode it a few miles. It's really loud, louder than the Jardine, and the old version of itself, modified that was, probably similar to the one you run. It does have a little dead spot like the Jardine around 2500 RPM, but pulls like a banshee after that. Ya its LOUD, I'm gonna need ear plugs for long rides. Its amazing what two holes and custom tips will do to the stock pipe.

I actually think it may be louder than the D&D, but maybe its because I built it. It isn't as loud as the force pipe, but it will make your ears ring, and force the old ladies to cringe.
