I remember seeing a place that takes a stock exhaust and modifies it so that it actually sounds good. Is it the Hawk mod? I can cut and weld myself, if needed... just wondering what everyone else has done to get that deep throaty sound to make my '09 sound better. Thanks!

I believe hawk performance used to but the most popular factory muffler mod is from Drummer and I believe he is still open for business. Google Drummer exhaust and it’s KD fab.

Not knowing your skill set. I hesitate on affirming that this could be a DYI project.

Now days, I would not mod a working muffler.

1. I removed the back of the stock muffler. Then removed a wide strip from the top, center, full length.

2. I left the full length tube that directs the gases to the back of the can as is.

3. I made up a flow director to smoothly redirect the gases around the back end of the can. Like a 180 degree piece of half cut tube.

4. I opened up the separator plate (wall) to the same diameter as the rest of the openings.

5. I then welded in four or five, baffle "walls" to create an (automotive type) "Flow Master" type muffler. It's got two (weld) chambers with the baffles to direct flow.

6. I opened up the front (front of the muffler) wall hole diameter to the same as the rest. Then like the back, I made a "half pipe" 90° turn, flow director for the exhaust to exit the front of the stock can. I went to a muffler shop and bought a scrap piece of stainless steel with the tightest curve that I could find, and welded it to the can so the exhaust has a smooth exit, to the out side, and back.

7. I plugged the rear exhaust exit, but left the stock exit tube in place...just for the hell of it !

8. I welded the rear of the can back on. I welded the top strip back into place. Looked closely for pin holes, painted it flat black barbecue paint.

The baffles NEED to be welded VERY solidly because of the pounding pulse's of the engines exhaust.
If yours turns out as mine did, I had to richen the entire fuel curve (all but the idle areas), because of the better exhaust flow.

All in all, while not NOISY, it does sound much better than the stock can, the engine runs better AND, get's much better gas mileage.
It took me a while with the computer, but with more fuel, and more ignition timing, my little XB12 runs great, and isn't anemic sounding.
Like I said, if done well, you WILL need to alter the fuel maps, and should alter the timing maps to get the full benefit of a freer flowing muffler.

I just had Kevin build a Drummer for me a couple months ago. Kevin does amazing high quality work for a fair price. I would not hesistate to deal with him in the future as well.

You might also be thinking of the Special Ops muffler mod, but I don’t think anyone has posted about this for quite a few years. May have retained the interactive valve but opened up the passages. Someone somewhere might have details if you want to explore different options.

I had gotten one modified by Hawk years ago. It worked great. The was back around...2010-2012 though, so no idea if he's still doing them.
