My friend's 2008 Ulysses has had some infrequent trouble light issues. They always seemed to clear on their own without issue….until now. Error codes were 16 and 21. He began a ride on the freeway, about 5mi out the Speedo/Tach quit working and no instrument lights. Thought about continuing but turned around after another 5 miles. Engine started losing power and running rougher…….until finally the engine died. Coasted to a halt and trucked bike home. Battery was fully discharged. It charged up fully in 4 hours, engine easily started and no error light. Historic error codes 16 and 21 remain. Ideas?? | ||

Have you checked the voltage regulator? You have to actually check the stator (2 tests IIRC), as a process of elimination. If the stator passes it's tests, the battery is good, then the VR, by process of elimination is bad. Also, check voltage at the battery while the engine is running. Check your manual for the appropriate voltages at differing RPM's. (Actually, do this FIRST). This happened to me 2 weekends ago. Got stuck at the lake - 3 hour fun ride turned into 5 hour not-so-fun ride. | ||

Just to be sure, code 16 is battery voltage high/low and 21 is exhaust valve actuator stuck open/closed. Blink codes are more generalized than scan codes but I think you could be reasonably assured that you have low voltage and the exhaust is just an unrelated secondary issue. Like everyone says, check with a meter per the manual. The charging system is pretty basic with fairly direct wiring and a few connections, not a lot of extraneous components to confuse things. | ||
