Hey guys my name is Dave, I am not new to HD or to sport bikes but I am new to Buell. I did not want to go back to another cruiser or a Japanese sport bike.. so I decided on a black and gold lightning and I wanted the 12. Last week I found one 1,200 miles from my house in southern NJ. I called the dealer and made them an offer, they took it so I left them a deposit.. today, I flew 1,000 from Philadelphia to Orlando FL, and than drove 200 miles to clearwater to check her out in person. It’s a 2004 with 39k (I wanted lower miles but what are you gonna do, these dont pop up that often) it’s clean and I scored it for 3k and it’s going to cost me $400 to ship home.. what do you guys think?

I think you should have taken a couple of days and rode it home :-)

Seriously, they're worth what you're comfortable spending on them. If YOU think you got a good deal, no one else's opinion matters.
FWIW, I don't think you did that bad....

Well the bikes clean and i do flip cars and bikes but I did not buy this as a flip. I was trying to post pics but can’t figure out how. And trust me taking a few days of back roads was on my mind but it just wasn’t practical

Owning a Buell is not practical. I would consider another motorcycle for your oil.

Oh yeah, don't listen to Tpehak. He's miserable and takes it out on the rest of us for some reason.

Yea, I've had similar problems with my Japanese sport bikes as I've had with my Buells.

Only one problem different - my XB12s had the dreaded wire chafing problem in the fuel pump mounting bracket. I fixed that and it's been trouble free since.
Almost 36,000 miles.

Thanks for your replies, and I didn’t mean the bike wasn’t practical, I mean it wasn’t practical for me to take the time to ride the bike home. I do have some questions about it though, I’ve had probably 5-6 Sportsters over the years the newest being a 2015 “forty eight” 1200. I had it tuned for drag pipes as well as an Arlen ness intake. It was a quick bike. Everyone always says buells are basically sport bike sportsters, other than the obvious differences, oil in the swing arm ect.. how similar do they behave? And how many parts are actually interchangeable? This bike has a stock exhaust and I wanted to run drag pipes onit and everything I read says NO. But I’ve ran drags on ALL my Harley’s big twins and sportys and never had a problem, if not drag pipes what slip on do you guys suggest? I want as much of the Harley sound as possible

Your Buell is NOT a Hardley big twin, or Sportster.
Drag pipes look like shit, and sound like shit on Buells.
If you want a good exhaust, that gives great performance, and has the sound you are looking for, get a Drummer.

I think the interchangeable parts are really only the pistons/cylinders and heads (after being modified). Oh, intake and exhaust gaskets should be the same as well. Maybe some of the fasteners are from the Harley parts bin as well.

S&S has a great video on tuning a bike with drag pipes. I think its summarized quickly at 4:35.

Comparing a BUELL to any HD is sacrilege! I use a JARDINE exhaust; wonderful sound!

I took her out today, and I have to say I LOVE this bike.. for somereason when it warms up the idle drops down to about 6-700 so I’m gonna bump that back up to around 1000-1100 and I noticed one of the fork seals is seeping so I’ll fix that also. Other than that she’s a lot of fun, it’s going to take a little getting used to sitting so high, she sits higher than even my Japanese sport bikes, and she’s shorter.. but all things I’ll get used to. So far I’m happy

Welcome. Theyre like nothing else, but once your butt gets used to a buell you wont want anything else. Very little interchanges with sportsters, though we have the same motor, its really not the same.

Wait till you get out on some twisty roads and can ride all day in 2nd gear and not have to shift constantly like on an import. the torque band is so smooth!

"I noticed one of the fork seals is seeping so I’ll fix that also."

I've 'fixed' many a fork seal with something called Sealmate. Simple plastic tool that allows you to scrape the dirt from between the seal and lower fork leg. Try that before you replace the seal.

"Theyre like nothing else, but once your butt gets used to a buell you wont want anything else."

Can confirm. Started riding Buell 7 years ago. Between my dad and I, there's a collection of 6 of 'em right now.

welcome!

good place for parts diagrams:
https://www.twinmotorcycles.nl/webshop/index.asp?m c=1

https://st-paul-harley-davidson-buell.myshopify.co m/ has a Lot of NOS parts for these bikes. at least visit the page for the pic of the guy doing a standing burnout.

there are some sellers on ebay who sell nos parts for decent prices. check new parts prices before buying used, often people sell used stuff for more.

the closest sporster engine for the most crossover parts is the 2004. intake seals, stator, oil pump, primary chain tensioner and some other stuff. primary gasket, etc. will need to come from James-like sources.
