Not getting much action over in the knowledge section so here goes...

Hi all, I have an issue with my 2006 xb12ss. Second gear is skipping under load, not deceleration but acceleration. I am considering my options and if I choose to tackle the repair I am wondering if anyone knows of any sources of replacement transmission parts, helical cut gears, dogs, forks and so forth, or is ebay my only avenue? Most of what I see on ebay is for the xb9s and pre 06 straight cut gears and while they might work it isn't what was designed for the machine. Hope I can find something out there as I dearly love the beast. Its my second one and I want it to live on.

Sounds like 2nd gear dogs are worn. They are part of the gear (on the side) so replacing the gear and its mating partner would fix it. Since XB's have no 'trap door' you'll be splitting the case to get to it so you might-as-well replace both gear sets if you're keeping the bike.

I have shipped these guys hard to find parts to re-machine from across the country. IMO they are the best: )

Oh that's going to suck: (
Have to split the cases.
My X1 did that and it was worn dogs on the second gears.
It was the last big hit on my extended warranty. I think the bill would have been $750 without it.

If I nailed it in second it would be fine but if I rolled on gradually, it would hop and skip. Sometimes badly enough to lift the front wheel.

Yes at higher rpm first to second is often ok but lower revs and it will almost always jump. If it is the second gear dogs I think I found a place in Europe that has oem ones available but who knows in reality what is the problem. Won't know until the transmission is out and apart and yeah, splitting the cases..... that's a big job. Little apprehensive about doing that myself but the repair bill at a shop would be more than the bike is worth otherwise.

The same thing happened to my XT a few years ago. I could put it in second gear, hold the brake on and let out the clutch and it would start jumping. Tore the whole engine down and found multiple parts worn. The affected shift fork was thin as well as the groove that it fit in on the sliding dog. Decided to send the whole thing to R & D Motorsports. Note that they want all parts including the output shaft. They do not only replace parts, every piece is shot blasted an magnafluxed for cracks then fully inspected. Bad parts are replaced and all the dogs are machined with a reverse taper so that when a gear is engaged they will draw themselves together and stay tight until the next shift. Quality work, not cheap but worth it.
Yeah, having to do the engine is the worst part. Having the appropriate manual is a must as well as being aware of any updates, such as didn’t the 06 and 07 have a revised torque on the rotor nut? Parts should still be available no matter what you decide to do. I think if you call SPHD they can help order parts that might not be shown online.

I was going to mention one other detail.
On my X1, the worn parts were very hard to see the damage.

It really pays to get someone with real experience to work on the thing.

There is no trap door for second chances.
My dealership had to take it apart twice because they didn't see the issue the first time and therefore didn't fix it.
