Asking for a friend who's just bought a 2005 XB12SS Lightning Long: did all of these come with a sidestand that ended almost directly underneath the shifter, making it nearly impossible to get your foot under the shifter?

I'm asking because while I have a bunch of Buells (Scg, X and a R/S hybrid) none of them have this problem and I was wondering if maybe this one has a non-standard shorter sidestand causing this problem.

Feels like there's just an inch separating the two.

The older SS has the same sidestand and footpeg arrangement as the regular height/length S.

Can you take a picture of it? It sounds like it may have been modified.

This is a 06 SS with the sidestand retracted

Is his kickstand missing the wire "U"?

Alright, here are the pictures:

Could it be that it's bent? Looks like it maybe.

my .02:
Looks like it was broken or otherwise shortened and rewelded.

How far does the bike lean?

Don't know what to say. FWIW, the stand on my '08TT is 13" from pivot bolt to foot. Extends almost to the exhaust outlet when folded up, so no shifter interference.

Could your friend have a Lightning Low, as opposed to Lighting Long?

An awkward work-around might be to adjust the linkage or rotate the arm one spline on the shaft to give more clearance, though that does put the toe peg higher . . .

Hope this helps, Dave

That last picture makes me think it was shortened and welded.

Lightning Low kickstands while shorter have a longer U loop that extends to the same spot that you would normally reach for.

Thanks for the input everyone.

It's definitely an SS. Long swing arm, SS designations top and bottom, and the wider frame.

This is the only pic I have of it parked at the moment. The angle doesn't seem to be abnormal.

Oh, one more question. If we were to replace this kickstand, what would we need to look out for? There are some differences per year, right? Like the width of that peg on which it pivots?

Looking at my XB again, the end of the side stand is almost (but not quite) directly under the primary case drain plug.

I will guess some previous damage to the side stand in question. A vice and a goodly application of heat and bending?

Hope this helps, Dave

Or perhaps a hydraulic press . . .

Well, we could try that. But neither of us are very good at metal working : D.

It looks "tweaked" and is way too ugly-looking to be in its original configuration.
