I have a 9R that started making loud ticking sounds and then all of a sudden the crank case explodes. So im in the market for a new motor and I am looking for an upgrade or at least an improvement of what I had. I was wondering if I could put in a 12R from an 08 with little trouble. What would be my best options and the what would be required to complete this project.

For the new 08 motor I know I would need a new ECU and I'm guessing wiring harness.

Or is there a fist gen motor that improves upon the internals, ie oil system, without it being the major overhaul that was the 08.

There are a few 08 upgrades in here, you'll need the entire wiring harness and ECM as well as oil system (swingarm or custom lines). Not sure if you need the instrument cluster too, can't remember.

I think the 06 motors got the upgraded oil drive gear and other than oil lines to swingarm should drop right in. I think the swingarms were all the same from 04 to mid 07, but 03 has a different set of oil lines.

If it were me, I would go with 9 engine that drops in, and then do a big bore kit on it, the 1050cc kits drop right in and increase the compression a little. You could of course go bigger, but then you would probably want the newer crank with the bigger bearings. Not absolutely needed, but probably a good idea.

No. 2008 was the big upgrade. new throttle body, oil system, larger crank, different oil line fittings.

I think the closest you could get to "plug and play" would be prior to 2008.

I want to maintain the engine stock. I don't really have a need for speed but I was just wondering if a 12 would fit right in.

So what years 9s and 12 motors would fit right in with minimal modifications? Is it just anything prior to 2008 now. Just want to confirm. Thanks guys.

If your bike is the 03 XB9R listed in your profile, 03-05 XB9 or XB12 will drop in but none of those years had any significant improvements over the 03 motor. 03-05 XBs used the same swingarm, 06-10 short models use the same swingarm, 06-10 long models use the longer version of that later arm.

If using an XB12 motor, you will want the XB12 intake manifold, exhaust header, and ECM (or reprogram your existing ECM). 04-10 XB9 and XB12 manifolds and throttle bodies are one one piece assemblies and use different injectors than the 03 XB9, so if using an 03-07 manifold you will need the later style injectors as well. Also, if using an 07 manifold, you will need the 07-only TPS sensor as it is different than the 99-06 TPS and will not interchange.

Also worth noting, XB12 uses an interactive exhaust, so if you are wanting to use a stock XB12 exhaust you will need an 04-07 XB12 muffler, airbox lid, exhaust valve actuator, cable, and ECM.

If I go with an Xb9 engine like before is there anything I can do so improve the reliability?

Honestly, this is the first XB9 I have heard of that ejected the shiny parts.
I thought the XB9 short strokers were pretty much bullet-proof.

Any idea what took yours out? Just a bad bearing?

Wasn't the oil pump gear upgraded by '07 and a good idea?

It was upgraded in 06 or 07 and has a retrofit part that should go in any machine that is going to be open.

Is that what went wrong with the original engine, you suppose?
Water under the bridge I suppose but it would still be nice to actually know.

I love XB9s moreso than the XB12s and I've had 10 XBs. To update an XB9 motor the shortlist should be a bronze manganese oil pump drive gear, 07 XB oil pump, XB12 intake manifold assembly, and XB12 header. I also like to throw in new gaskets using a Cometic .030 head gasket. You can do more, but that's the threshold IMO for the "low hanging fruit" for both more power and more reliability.

I was minding my own business riding on the interstate and I hear this very loud banging noise coming from the front cyl. engine loses power and shuts off. When I get home it doesnt hold an idle. Sounds like its running on the rear cyl. 2 years later I plan on dropping the engine to see whats up so I am purging the injectors and try to crank it. It turns and turns and then bang. Chunks from the case up front are on the ground now.

I had the oil pump drive gear fail on my 03' XB9R. The drive gear spun itself through the cam gears and ground that part of my motor up. I ended up parting that whole bike out and picking up a used 04' XB12R.

You can find some of my posts/articles here in Badweb about the issue.
