I want to gut my muffler and make a DIY Drummer.

What problems has anyone run into if any from gutting your own exhaust system?

What did you do with the Interactive Exhaust Valve? Cut it out or leave it.

From my research the Drummer is just a gutted exhaust with an expanded metal screen to hold the packing in place and a new end cap.

What happened to your HP, MPG, etc... with the at home mod?

I don't have the money for a Drummer but I do know how to fab.

I also know that I would need to flash my ECM to tune the bike, which I plan to do with Buelltooth.

I have also thought about a DIY Hawk, from the research on that it is a gutted can with a new end and a V shape baffle welded onto the end cap.

Thoughts or guidance would be helpful

If you're looking to hand make a muffler on the cheap, several people here have made a Magnaflow fit and had good results. You can find those online for about 100$ and they don't require too many mods to work.

Personally I would go with anything except cutting the stock muffler. Just one of those things where I like to be able to put things back to stock if I want or the mod doesn't turn out how I want it to work.

Some cheapo cherrybomb mufflers with a fabbed up Y inlet like one of the other aftermarket exhausts used.

I cut mine up (05, XB-12).

Removed the back and top, and much of the original guts.
Installed baffles within the existing three sections, moved the outlet to the front of the muffler. Much easier that way.
Remember, "smooth the flow path", while adding baffles.
Welded it back together, repainted.

Sounds good without being obnoxious.

And needed much more than a "flash" to the ECM. You'll either need dyno work to do it right or like I did...continuous experimentation and ECM modification. Needed more fuel through out, but needed much more as the rpm climbs. Also made ignition timing changes.
Overall...the larger power gain is in the ignition timing, not the fuel curve.

The engine runs well now, better through out the rpm range, and good mileage to boot.

Pic of my old XB12s with Magnaflow. It sounded AMAZING!
