The tps sensor is adjustable. If you loosen the screws you can rotate it. Turn it counter clockwise and then slowly rotate it clockwise until you feel it engage the tps pin on the butterfly shaft. Rotate a little more to take any play out of the sensor as it's got a spring in there that needs some pressure to hold steady. Make sure the butterfly is clean when resetting it. You have to back off the idle screw until the butterfly sticks in the bore before you reset it. It is also, most of the time, better to do this with a hot engine. I'm thinking this is your problem.

Tootal,

Thank you for the reply. Just to make sure it is all back together correctly I went back outside to the garage and followed your directions. With the 2 bolts for the tps almost all the way out there is a minimal amount of travel in either direction. So I took the bolts all the way out. Rotated the tps counter-clockwise till it engaged the butterfly shaft, then rotated it clockwise to engage the spring in the tps sensor. From the point of engaging the shaft to putting preload on the spring of the sensor there is maybe 1/8 inch of rotation. When I put the 2 bolts back into the tps sensor I maintained light clockwise pressure to ensure engagement of the shaft into the sensor. When looking at the sensor the holes are not really slotted more oversized than anything. Once tightened I backed off the idle so that when the butterfly snapped shut it would stick slightly in the bore of the throttle body. At this point I am ready for the tps reset. Just waiting for my dongle to arrive. Any thoughts or observations to what I did here? Comments or any corrections are always appreciated.

Joe

Tighten it back up, the electronic adjustment does not require physically turning the tps unit. It will just tell the ecm where the closed throttle position is, then you adjust the idle speed screw for proper value.

Sounds good to me. There were a few guys that had idle issues, many years ago, and found that the sensor didn't have any pressure on it and therefore the idle bounced around. After rotating the sensor it cured their problems. Mine was one of them. You were right, the holes aren't slotted but do have some play. I would now reset your tps and then take it for a 20 minute ride and see how it runs. If it still isn't as good as you think it should be then reset the tps while it's hot. This usually works the best although there have been a handful of guys who said there's was best set cold.

Canxb: what Tootal described is a tps hard reset. to make sure tps is loaded at all times for proper functioning. the soft tps reset is when you close throttle plate fully and press reset tps button in software. when you get connected, note that tps settings are in % opening , degree of opening, and voltage that the tps is seeing. note these in your notebook ( I know you have one allready ) to see what changes might happen in the future. note your iat, clt, o2 sensor, etc as these will be your baseline to your buell. not everything is by the book for someodd reason but you will know what you have had and if things change and buell starts running poorly, go back and use info to see what may have changed. when your on your own like some of us are, you can't go borrow a part from a bud to see if you can temporarily fix an issue. it sounds like you have done really well in going after your repair in a proper way. Kudos to you! take care and keep us informed.
Tootal , hope your doing well!

Well, here is the update. The dongle arrived Friday and I reread the directions probably 10 times at least before even trying to connect. My wife is fairly tech savvy so i had her load up ecmdroid on her phone and I used my phone to follow the directions. Initially it would not connect and kept saying that it timed out. This did not help my nerves at all. Eventually for some reason it just connected. I did nothing different and have no idea why, but i was not complaining. I was connected and on my way. I ensured the throttle was backed off and snapped the throttle closed a few times. The throttle plate was sticking in the bore so i was good to go. The tps reset was simple and easy as i followed the directions and completed each step. Then i switched over to view live data and started to adjust my tps. After a couple turns i would snap the throttle and confirm the reading. As i got close to 5.5 the adjustments were finer and the throttle checks were more frequent. Finally got to 5.5 and i was ready to go. Started the bike and it ran a bit rough. It actually died twice when the idle got real low. I did have the fuel line off again and attributed it to that. Once going again i adjusted the idle to just over 1000 rpm. As the bike warmed up and the idle crept up i would adjust it back to just over 1000 rpm. After a short warm up i went for a short run through the subdivision. The bike ran good. After one last adjustment the idle settled in at just over 1000 rpm and i left it there. I will confirm the idle is right after i get a chance to go on a good ride and the bike is able to get to and stay at operating temperature for more than just a couple minutes. I am hoping to ride to work this week if it ever stops raining and that will be the true test, the shakedown run so to speak. It seems to be good but i would like to make a good run before making that statement. Either way I will let you folks know for sure.

Now the thank you. Thank you all. Thank you for reading and offering any help or suggestions. They are all greatly appreciated. Even if all you did was read with the chance of being able to help I want to thank you for taking the time to try. All the help and support was appreciated and I will be back to let everyone know how the bike is running as soon as the weather co-operates. Thank you all again...

Just a note on that warm up thing. In data logs on my 07x, it has taken to 6 minutes or so before bike got to 160 c. When you shut motor off and fan comes on, it cools quickly to 150c or lower depending on ambient. Then you are back on cold start enrichment again to get back to 160 or 180 c depending on what your settings are. I went and rode bike to warm up another time. Stopped back at house , got laptop hooked up and started log and went for a longer ride. That showed 3 minutes till got back to 160c. A good reason why our buells are not a go to the store or short ride bike. Fuel mileage will suffer on short trips like this. Glad your making progress.
