I was browsing around a store this weekend, saw a Websters picture dictionary with a motorcycle on it, so I figured I'd flip through it. I went to see what they had for a motorcycle and saw this. They took a few liberties with the picture, with things like the front brake, exhausts, calling the airbox the gas tank, and for some reason they completely removed the suspension from the front forks... but overall I think they were just trying to make it a bit more consistent with other bikes.

That's really strange.
Like they worked at it to mess it up.

If they wanted a conventional bike, they should have just used a pic of a conventional bike.

Like a 1980 CB750. Everything out in the open and where you expect it to be.

The only thing that would be more confusing is if they tried to apply the same thing to a Neracar.

I'm pretty sure there were a few different bikes in there. When I looked in the index there was about 6 different pages listed for motorcycles, so they probably had a standard, a cruiser, dirtbike, etc. The sportbike was the only one I went to. I agree it seemed odd they didn't just pick a gsxr that already had everything in the places they wanted, but I thought it was cool so I wasn't going to complain. Maybe the guy that worked on that page had an XB9R and wanted his bike in the book, so he made the modifications.

Only thing I'm concerned about is how quickly that side stand is going to snap off the bike the first time someone tries to park the bike with it bolted to nothing but the chin fairing...

Some others, I don't see the XB listed there though. Maybe they've moved on to a new edition.

They likely altered it to avoid paying some type of licensing fee. They may have had to pay a small amount for the base image, but with the alterations it was distorted enough to be considered a new work and wouldn't need royalties when published.

This is both cool and incredibly annoying. 'Gas tank'. Man :P

I like how it point to the timing cover and calls it a carburetor...

I understand that they need an "original work" to avoid royalties but why didn't they just actually draw one out?
Actually labeling a thing wrong like that is infuriating.
This is supposed to be a reference book so that kids can learn, right?

That's really ok though . . . they are "kinda showing" the concept of a motorcycle to a novice . . . not offering up a detailed example to the well versed.

In the instant use, labeling it a "gas tank" is good. That conveys a sense of "what a motorcycle is and how it's arranged" . . . it's logical.

They should have an entry that reads"

BUELL - (Bew' - ell) - Turn as far from motorcycle entry as possible and get ready to see the sun shine in.

"point to the timing cover and calls it a carburetor"

Maybe they were thinking of rotary valve 2 strokes with the carb on the side?

haha that's funny, I didn't even notice the carburetor part. I see they put the clutch on the right side of the engine too.

I had assumed the guy in charge of that section had a yellow xbr and just wanted his bike in the book, but after seeing the carburetor and clutch listed like that, I assume some random person just picked a picture of google and labeled it like that not knowing the difference.
