2005 XB12: So I went out to fire up the trusty beast today and battery was dead - no worries there, it had been sitting idle for months, so I swapped a battery. As soon as I connected the terminals, the cooling fan came on (ignition 'off', run switch 'off')- strange, I think... The bike had been running fine when it was last ridden... Turn the key on, and immediately blow the ignition switch fuse - OK - may have a short in the switch harness, but that doesn't explain the fan running continuously. Any Ideas? I only speak from my research as I recently bought a 08 Ulysses. I remember reading that such weird electrical ghosts have to do with the grounding wires/points (think there are 3 on this bike?). Anyway, do a good search within this forum as well as BuellXB.com, search grounding and electrical. Otherwise the community here is incredibly helpful & willing to go way out of their way, I'm sure someone more knowledgeable will reply shortly. 5 people in my area have offered to help me do 10K service on my bike, when I asked. Wow! The fan coming on like that sounds like a grounding issue. | ||

Sounds to me like you connected your battery terminals up the wrong way around, best go check and be prepared for some misery. Good luck.  | ||

Loose grounds usually cause gremlins - a lesson learned from campaigning the 1125. Battery is connected correctly (I'm not at total newb) - I did find that the neutral circuit diode is bad, so that will get replaced... just hoping I don't dig in and find mice have been at work.... | ||

Been there, done that. Seriously, in a big garage full of all sorts of crap, you would think they could find something a little more appetizing than the insulation on the wiring harness for a rear tail lamp and bank angle sensor. |
