Excuse my ignorance, but after finally diagnosing my ping/tap/rattle witht he great help of a few folks on here.. I would LIKE to try to retard my timing in just a few cells rather than just pulling the cover and retarding the whole system.

I cannot get ECMSPY to connect to my bike however. It tells me it cannot find the com port.. I have tried autodetect and every other thing I can think of. Its on an old laptop, so If I need to download any newer drivers, I need to download it onto another PC and then transfer it over to the laptop, it doesn't have internet capability?

I'm just not sure what to download?

From what im reading, it depends on the cable?
My version of ECMspy came with the bike, its not a bootleg version.

Did you install the FTDI’s CDM drivers, you will need them, or it will not recognize the cable.

There could be several reasons that won't let you connect to the bike. Obvious : key and kill switch
The driver needs to be installed so your computer can recognize the bike and let ECMSPY see it
And AFAIK it only works on one USB port. trial and error to find which one

On FTDI's site,I only see VCP or D2XX drivers available for download unless im missing something?

How do I know if it is an FTDI cable? I cannot see any name on it that I remember, I will look when I get home.

I installed the CDM 2.08.28 driver, google it and download it and see if it works for you. Also, click autodetect in ECMSPY.

Thank you.. It seems I have downloaded it here on my office computer, I just need to take it home and install it on my laptop I have ECMSPY on..SO next question.. how does this driver actually install? I see no EXE file or anything similar to actually Install the driver? Or do I just place the folder with all the data within the ecm py sub directory?

Sorry for the redundant stupid questions, just trying to get it up and running quickly as possible.

Is this computer running XP or Vista/7/8?

XP can be a pain to install the driver, but Vista/7/8 will automatically install the driver, it just needs to have internet access to download it for you.

What you need to do is open your Device Manager and see what the cable is doing. On XP, click Start, Control Panel, System, under the System Properties tab is a button labeled Hardware, click that to bring you into the device manager.

On Vista/7/8, open the start menu and type device manager in the search box then click on it when it comes up.

Expand the Ports tree if it isn't expanded, and you should see your cable listed (name will vary a little bit, but it should be obvious)

If it is there, and there is no yellow exclamation box on its icon, it should be good to go, remember which COM number it has, then manually pick that in ECMspy instead of autodetecting.

If you do have the exclamation icon, you can install the driver from here by right clicking it, going to properties, then picking update driver and pointing it to the files you downloaded.
