Hi, I hope you can help me answer the question quickly? I am converting my sportster into a dirt bike using KTM front end and I want to use 7/8" handlebar instead of the 1" so I was wondering if I could buy a dirt bike 7/8" handlebar and then use Buell clutch/throttle cable and switch controls on the 7/8" handlebar??

I am trying to shed too many of unnecessary steel weight and trying to get sportster as light as possible! I got rid of both HD wheels replacing them with Excel 21" front rim and HD Cafe racer rear rim, KTM front end (save 20lbs), and find that HD handlebar with clamp and switch housing weight a ton! So you know my reason for doing..

The only thing you may struggle with is cable length, so go for the Ulysses throttle cables as these should be the longest available : )

You will have to rewire the turn signals as H-D switchgear has switches on both bars and Buells have Jap style single switches on the left bar.

Other than that...can't see any major problems

I'm not sure how thee turn signals will work for you. HD uses a momentary contact switch with self canceling signal, where Buell uses the normal on/off switch where the turn signal is manually canceled by turning the switch to the off position. The rest of the electrical stuff should be simple wire splicing. As mentioned, clutch and throttle cables may be an issue. Worst case, there are places that can make up custom cables for you if the Uly cables come up short.

Hi,

Thanks for the reply and my sportster is a 98 XLhugger 883 so I don't know if that helps to mention this as 883 usually is a bit smaller than XL1200? Length might be an issue?

As for signal light, I removed HD signal lights and am planning to use dirt bike signal lights because they are lighter and flexible in case I spill. The stock one did not turn off by itself I have to manually turn it off anyway. The relay to turn it off automatically can be purchased so I might get it?

As for the wire connecting the switches, I assume I can replace the connector? Do you have Buell wiring map that display the color of on/off, kill, low/high, and signals? Maybe if I had access to the wiring map, I could compare it to my sportster map and help me set up the connector correctly?

Oh yeah, for those of you with Ulysses, think you can measure the length of throttle and clutch cables?
