Hey how are you guys doing today. I was wondering if anybody had some good advice for my 2006 XB12SS.
First I put hawk muffler on it. It ran fine (felt like it lost a little bottom power but fine). Then I did the breather reroute. It ran Fine. Then I did the swiss cheese airbox. It ran fine. Lastly, I put a K and N air filter in it. Then it all went bad.
First, it would crank fine and I could drive on down the road for about 15 min then it would backfire and cut off. It would not crank for about 5 min. And when I did it would run fine for a while.
Next, I tried a TPMS reset. Nothing change.
Lastly, I tried a few different fuel maps, being sure to do a TPMS reset in between and now its even worse. Even the stock map is worse now.
I'm stummped.

I'm going to suggest that the changes you have made are not responsible for the current running issues. Never hurts to go back and make sure no electrical connectors have come partially apart, or a wire(s) has gotten pinched. As always, confirm the security and connection of the battery cables.

That said and done, I'm looking at an electrical issue, somewhat heat related. Check the cam position sensor, and the connectors and wiring from there to the ECM. Good chance the problem is there.

So what is the AFV during all of this? And have you looked at the engine temp sensor reading while running?

Thanks guys I'm going to retrace my steps tomorrow and make sure none of my wires are pinched or anything crazy.

And I'm going plug my bike into my laptop to see whats going on with the AFV. But if I remember correctly, You can change the percentage of correctness. I increased mine to like 120% and my bike maxed it out to12%

My XB9 doing the same thing ran fine and then intermittently it would back fire and the bike would shut down. I spent a lot of cash and time trouble shooting the problem. HD Dealer twice with no fix(recomended the wiggle test and change the factory ECU) a new ECU from Eric. Got to the bottom of the problem with the help of JTS out of Somona, Ca. Turned out to be one of the relays in the fuse box was bad changed all three and it now runs fine.

So did your bike have an AFV of 112----if so it was seeing a lean condition in the "learned fuel" area(not unusual with the changes you made) and then adding 12% more fuel EVERYWHERE. Could have caused an over rich condition and fouled a plug.
One lean cell can cause this!
And your making the seting to 120 could do this as well as the algorithms in the ecm see this and make some big changes. Only had to do this--to 105--to a big inch X-1.Mapping the learned fuel area is what is needed.

I spoke with Randy Hawkings from from Hawks exhaust and he said that the changes I have made should not have caused it to back fire and cut off. But still it just seems funny that as soon as I put a K and N in it starts this. And now it wont even start.

And what is AFV now? Look at your plugs--if they are fouled it won't run.

Thanks Firemanjim. I am giong to look at the plugs now. I just checked my fuses and relays and all of them seem to be ok. And I couldn't see where any wires going to any sensors were damaged

The problem is you messed with so much stuff... who knows what it is?!?

Did it clearly and obviously start with the K&N filter? Or could that have been a coincidence?

The problem you describe could be caused by an intermittent crank position sensor, which can die without throwing a code. Hard to check without an oscilloscope.

As previously suggested, I think your mods are unrelated.

I vote bad ECM, just because those are the same symptoms I had when my ECM went bad on my '07 Uly.
When my ECM went bad it was also throwing multiple codes ... did you check your codes?

Yes I checked them it just had the one for the interactive exhaust valve. And I changed my plugs and they were fouled from it running rich. And it fire right up. Now I just have to find out why it was running rich. And to everyone who hss given me advice thanks very much.

Ok. I changed my plugs which were fouled. So, its running rich. Yet, at random times after about 20 min of riding it backfires through intake and cuts off. Still even after replacing the plugs. I'm stumped.

get to someone who knows how to use ecm spy or a similar program. The TPS reset is wrong and the information you can and will get from proper use of the programs mentioned will if not cure isolate the problem.

It has been my experience that when I was chasing what I was sure were fueling issues (granted, it involved carbs and points and condensers, but the principle applies) like your fouled plugs, and the issue did not respond to corrections, like a TPS reset, the problem turned out to be an ignition one.

I like Czms's comment about the relay. A dodgy Ign relay can cause weak spark, which can show up as black or fouled plugs. And a weak relay can suddenly 'open' after it has been in use for a while and gets warm.

Fresh plugs and new relays may be the answer. Certainly less costly that a new ECM.

Mine was doing almost the same thing. Everything you have done just makes the problem worse if the AFV is not at it's proper setting. I would get ECM spy and see what value you have for AFV. It may be this sensor or that but I almost changed them all looking to fix an issue like yours.

oh and when it starts backfiring the gauges go wild or don't work at all for a second.
And It seems to start the backfiring once the engine is good and warm. never on initial start

I know this is an old post but I think this could really help others out there with the same problem. My bike backfired and died again out of the blue. But this time I took my seat off wiggled the wires going to the ecm and it started right up. Upon closer inspection I could see wear the seat has been touching the wiring harness and a little bit of the insulation was rubbed off one of the wires. Finally found my problem. DjohnK you nailed it.
