I am due for my 10k service on my 09 XB12Ss and was curious to know if the recommended fork oil change is necessary. It seems to me that the fork service makes up for a huge chunk of what you pay for when having the 10k service done.

What do you guys recommend and how long do you typically go? I am strictly a street rider if this makes any difference.

Also, if I was to get the fork service done, would switching to a synthetic fluid allow me to go longer between fork oil change intervals?

Any comments or advice are appreciated. Thanks!

They're common forks on quality bikes.

Got mine done, they were leaking, at a Ducati tech shop.

IF you need seals changed, they are just o-rings, seals and dust cover common to MANY Showa forks. You can have the work done by any independent shop.

Just changing the fluid is simple enough to do yourself if you can lift the front from a hoist or other overhead support (garage rafter beam works nicely)

You can use the triple clamps to allow you to wrench the top cap loose BEFORE taking the forks out. Just loosen them and put them back hand-tight (so you don't spill when you pull the forks down and out)

Pour out the oil, pump forks, then set to drain. Re-fill, reassemble.
